Veggies, I need some help!?!

Question: Veggies, I need some help!?
I have a cousin who is thinking about becoming a vegetarian. I need some help because she doesn't know if she could make that decision overnight. Like eat meat one day and then the next day decide you're not eating meat ANYMORE.....what advice should I give her?

I'm a veggie myself.....but I need more people's opinions/advice to her.

thanks!!!

Hi, she doesn't have to make the decision overnight. It's quite an important step so it's a good idea for her to look into how to do it properly before she commits. If she doesn't do her research then she could end up feeling weak or ill, which will make it harder for her to stick with it.

Maybe she could start by having 3 days a week without meat. That way she can see what it's like and get practice at preparing vegetarian foods. She can then start to build up to 4, then 5,6 days a week, before finally cutting it out for good.

She should spend some time looking into how to stay healthy, finding out what vegetarian meals she likes and is able to make, and deciding whether it's something she wants to stick with.

I'd advise her to look at some good veg websites with information on the basics of nutrition etc, so she knows what to replace her current food with. A good one to start with is www.vegansociety.com, but there are lots. As well as learning what vegetarians usually eat, so she continues to eat everything her body needs, this will also hopefully make her feel more positive about it being a good choice for her long-term health.

You could take her shopping to buy some fake meats and other veg products which she could try out. Fake meats often help people make the transition when they want to go veg but are so used to having meat, so not having something 'meaty' on the plate feels like something is missing.

Making veg friends is a good step too, if all her friends eat meat she may feel like the odd one out and like the only person in the world who is a vego. There are some good vegetarian online communities she could join in with, or join a local vegetarian/vegan society or meet-up group, or if she's still at school or college there might be a vegetarian club there. A good active online community is http://vegsoc.org.au/forum_active.asp - it is based in Australia but people can access it from anywhere - it's also a great place to ask any questions and get advice from long-time vegans and vegetarians.

vegetarian then vegan for most of my life.

It's really up to her, and whether she finds certain imperatives compelling enough.

I went from omnivore to a vegan overnight, so I don't see why that's bad.
If you've decided it's unethical/unhealthy/wasteful to eat meat or animal products,
why continue to do so?

you could tell her to just start decreasing her meat intake so in time she wont feel like she wants to eat it. also have her eat more veggies so she will want to eat those more often, dont have her stop all at once. let it be a gradual thing to see if she even likes it or not

I literally just stopped like you said overnight, one day i ate meat the next i never ate it again...ever and that was 25 years ago.It was the best thing i ever did and i have never looked back.I am also a healthy weight for my height and very healthy.

Tell her to try it for a just a week to see what it's like. This is what I did and I never ate meat again!

i actually did it right in a day like you said.
