Why do people not become vegetarian?!

Question: Why do people not become vegetarian?
The Benefits are there to see, i mean 18% of the world co2 is caused by animal production. That is more than all transportation. SO it is economical.

Animals have feelings, however they are AMORAL, which basically means that they don't understand the feelings of other animals very well, hence why you don't get vegetarian cats! It isn't the animals fault. We however are moral, and understand about feelings, pain etc so it is unjust for us to eat meat.

As well as this is would stop poverty as well because the vegetarian diet is not only cheaper but a LOT more healthy, the public health services (UK talk here!) would have lower bills. Especially in the cardio department.

Look i don't want to rant, and if you don't like this, feel free to keep your opinions to yourself, but common, what is wrong with the world?

Answers:

Sure you want to rant. Then you don't want anyone to rant back. Fat chance.

Where are you getting 18%? Out of thin air? The UN has admitted their big report showing meat production was a major cause of climate change was wrong.

"UN admits flaw in report on meat and climate change
The UN has admitted a report linking livestock to global warming exaggerated the impact of eating meat on climate change."

You're wrong again. Humans are natural omnivors. We've evolved eating meat. We need in meat/animal products. You can't get vitamin B12 anywhere but in animal products. So if people don't eat meat/dairy/eggs, they have to take a handful of pills. Most people don't want to do that. They'd rather enjoy a nice steak or bacon and egges, etc.

Who says so? VeganHealth, VRG, The Vegan Society all tell veg*ns to supplement for B12. Pills, shots or highly processed fortified foods, certainly not a "natural" diet, huh?

No, vegetarianism wouldn't "save" the world. It would damage our environment greatly. Here in the US virtually every acre of arible land is under cultivation, while cattle are mainly raised on land that's not suitable for cultivation. If everyone gave up meat, there would be very little more land available for food production. Just replacing the heme iron that people get from beef with the non-heme iron in veggis would probably require thousands more acres of veggies be planted, cultivated, harvested, stored. That has a cost in fuel, greenhouse gases, and animals killed in the fields under tractors and farming implements, to name a few.

"At the present growth rate of 1.1% per year, the U.S. population will double to more than half a billion people within the next 60 years. It is estimated that approximately one acre of land is lost due to urbanization and highway construction alone for every person added to the U.S. population.
This means that only 0.6 acres of farmland would be available to grow food for each American in 2050, as opposed to the 1.8 acres per capita available today. At least 1.2 acres per person is required in order to maintain current American dietary standards. Food prices are projected to increase 3 to 5-fold within this period."

"Animals of the field are killed by several factors, including:

1. Tractors and farm implements run over them.
2. Plows and cultivators destroy underground burrows and kill animals.
3. Removal of the crops (harvest) removes ground cover allowing animals on the surface to be killed by predators.
4. Application of pesticides."

Well, first of all, it's people like you that make people dislike vegetarians/vegans so much. So thanks for perpetuating that stereotype. Not everybody is vegetarian because, while it's physically possible for everybody, it's not necessarily the right choice. People have different morals, beliefs, and lifestyles, and just because they eat meat doesn't make them any less of a good person. In the end, it's a personal choice that each person has the right to make for themselves. So please, stop forcing your beliefs on others--it only makes you look insecure.

Non-judgemental, open-minded vegetarian of 6 months.

Personally I would rather raise my own meats and support small farms then to go against all meat.
Also their is no real proof that a vegetarian diet is any healthier.
Just because their are benefits to being a vegetarian does not mean their is no benefits to eating good meats and neither one is better in my opinion, just depends on what you stand for.
I have heard the points you made many times all ready but I will not change my diet.
I don't like this at all, I think its fine that you are vegetarian but don't go around trying to change other peoples diets and thinking you are superior. Their are many things wrong with the world but the fact that everyone is not a vegetarian is not one of them.

The problem is that we are human beings. Naturally, we are omnivores and we exercise our right to be omnivores by eating meat as well. Even if your arguments are completely true, some people are more influenced by their instincts than their minds.

The other thing to consider is that we are allowed freedoms and we are allowed to exercise our freedom. If people want to eat meat, they can do that. If people want to drive a big gas-guzzling car that destroys our planet, they can do that as well; even as damaging to the planet as it is.

well you're not keeping your opinions to yourself so i won't either.
nothings wrong with the world. just because people eat meat and don't have the same viewpoints as you with what goes in their stomach doesn't mean that there is something wrong with people. if everyone was like you we'd all be whining on yahoo about something that's really about personal choice. animal feelings? thanks for the laugh.

MEAT!!! YUM

The fact is, even though it's better, it doesn't mean we will do it. Cycling is healthier than riding in a car and produces no carbon emissions (except the ones that are made in creating it). Not smoking is healthier and, again, better for the planet than smoking, but people still do it. The answer as to what is wrong with the world is us humans. We are selfish. We are, just as is said in the Matrix films, a virus. We multiply and destroy.

Hi, I've actually wondered this too. Part of it will be convenience and habit, but I think it mainly comes down to the fact that they like it.

I'm sure they're not thrilled about the fact animals have to die for it, but they enjoy it too much to let that stop them.

The reality is we only get one life, and they probably don't want to spend theirs depriving themselves of the food they like.

That's my only suggestion.

Vegan

I completely disagree with the healty statement.
I was vegetarian for two years and noticed my nails, hair and skin were much less healthy than from when i ate meat..therefore i went back to it. Nothing can provide the same nutrients and vitamins that meat can, it also poses no harm to us unless it isnt cooked properly.

I see you are a vegan propaganda reader. And you thinking it is immoral to eat meat is just your opinion. And everyone becoming vegetarian would stop poverty? That's Funny and its FALSE! Its none of your business what I or anyone else eats!

evian, espressos, vine tomatoes, wildcaught organic sturgeon, rainbow trout, john dory, branzino, dover sole

Some people choose not to be a vegetarian, and some people have never given vegetarianism any thought. It just depends on the person.

You haven't mentioned the primary reason:

Meat tastes ******* delicious.

a lot of my friends wish they could do it but their only excuse is, "it Just tastes too good, i cant give it up" so yea pretty sad

because meat is protein and you need to to grow strong :) hope that helps

humans are omnivores which mean we where created to eat both meat and vegetables. all though you thinks its bad, its nature and nature created humans to be able to eat meat.

I have considered becoming vegetarian because I think its healthier and i feel bad for the animals, but being raised for 20 years eating nice juicy hamburgers and chicken is hard to give up. The majority of veggies i dislike so eating veggies most the time just wouldn't work out well for me. I understand 100% that its' healthier but regardless people aren't willing to give up there meat and thats just there personal choice i guess just like some ppl choose to be vegetarians. As for eating animals and how its sad, i agree on some level. Obviously it's wrong and nasty for someone to eat an animal that was raised as your pet like your cat or your dog, or pet bird etc...but as for chickens and cows that are raised on farms i truly don't think that they feel pain in the same way that we feel pain, they don't know whats going on and they are killed in a humane way and raised to be eaten. I guess that's just my opinion though...

I don't think there is ANYTHING wrong with eating meat or GOD would have made us herbavores. He did not however. He made rabbits, deer, horses herbavores but us humans were made to eat meat. I guarantee if you were trapped on a desert island with no organic vegan grocer available you'd find it easy to catch, kill and devour any animal. I don't think there is anything amoral about eating meat. I think the conditions in which animals are kept and the way they are slaughtered (in most cases) are cruel. So I opt for free range foods. I pay more for it but I know the animal was killed as quickly and painlessly as possible after living it's life the best it could as a kept animal.

Because they choose not to. choosing to be a vegetarians as the term "choose" obviously implies is an option not a necessity.
18% MAY be caused by animal farming but 76% is caused by other non essential human activity. Removing half of this is much more efficient than removing 18%. In fact the UN committee that made that study you are alluding to recommended that an even more intensified farming system is the best solution.
Morality is not universal but subjective. When you say it is AMORAL, that is your opinion only and not even generally accepted even by those whose profession involves morality studies and issues.

Vegetarian diets are not that cheaper. Catching your own fish, raising your own chickens, pigs etc, hunting is a lot cheaper than planting on land that you do not and cannot own. Indigenous and poor people cannot afford to own land but they can hunt and forage and gather food. Do not confuse your relatively affluent standard of living and your luxury of abundant choices with the rest of the world. Poverty is not caused by eating meat. Poverty is caused by uneven distribution of wealth. In fact what most Westerners enjoy as shelves upon shelves of produce is the result of underpaid, abused and exploited third world workers (including children as young as 6 years old) working on crop farms but unable to afford the very crops they plant and harvest because they are reserved for relatively affluent US buyers. Many US produce companies operate in third world countries especially Asia and south America.

What is wrong with the world is that too many people like you for instance live in one tiny corner of it and think they know everything, everyone else is the same and should live by your opinions.

I agree with you really. I just don't think some people see the big picture. Yes, we evolved, but how is cooking your food any unnatural than being a vegetarian? So many people eat processed junk and then have the cheek to say that vegetarianism is unnatural. I want to know how they even define unnatural. Our survival tool = a damn good brain. We evolved with a brain and we reason with that, of course it's natural. If I wanted their definition of natural, I would go live in a draught and walk half the earth to get me some coconut. It's surely not natural to even use a condom then is it, because sweet mother nature is perfect? Yes we are omnivores but we are opportunist eaters too. It is better for the environment and is less suffering for animals.

Edit: I was raised a vegetarian since birth. I am healthy. I didn't even consider the debate until I was older, as I was always running around playing out and that was just my way of life.

Because they're greedy, they dont care about the environment, they dont care about their health and they dont care about the animals that are suffering in the meat and fishing industries.

There is nothing wrong with the world. I am equipped to eat meat, I like it and I can afford it. You are the minority, so stuff it.

IN THE BIBLE, GOD SAID THAT HE PUT THE ANIMALS ON THE EARTH, AND THAT THEY ARE USED AS FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!… VEGETARIANS BOOOOO SHAME ON YOU:(

OK. I think you all are being too self-concealed about this.

First of all, to the asker, NOTHING is wrong with the world. Just because we have different opinion's doesn't make us insane or something.

To everyone else that's being rude to the asker, stop pointing fingers. We all have our opinions.

Now, my answer: I'm not goin' to start being all religious, but, um. In the Bible is says animals were put here to be used as food, pets, and/or transportation (Camels). We are omnivores. We are MADE to eat meat, AND veggies.

Don't like it? Get the frigg over it.
