vegetarian sub for Worcestershire sauce in chex mix?!

Question: Vegetarian sub for Worcestershire sauce in chex mix?
i make chex mix every year around this time. my friends and family just gobble the stuff up - including my sister who is a vegetarian. i didn't realize until this year worchstershire sauce has anchovies in it. boo! now she cant eat it. i want to make her some that she can. what can i put in it that would give it a similar flavor. soy sauce? that would make it taste too salty and oriental.

Answers:

There is vegan worcestershire sauce available, you just have to check ingredients. It can be hard to find though. This is the recipe I use when I make worcestershire for snack mix, but for anything else, I just use soy sauce instead.

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp. soy sauce
2 tsp. water
1 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. each dry ginger, dry mustard, garlic powder & onion powder
1/8 tsp. each cinnamon and black pepper

Combine everything in a saucepan over med. high heat & whisk well. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, stirring constantly for one minute. Set aside to cool. Makes about 3/4 cup.

You could also make it sweet instead of savory, and mix in melted chocolate instead or maybe a cinnamon/brown sugar glaze.

Here is the recipe I use. Also, when making Chex Mix, I substitute olive oil for the butter and everyone thinks it tastes better.

Vegan Worcestershire Sauce

Makes 6 tablespoons
Time: Less than 5 minutes

? cup unfiltered cider vinegar
2 tablespoons molasses
? teaspoon salt
? teaspoon onion powder
? teaspoon garlic powder
? teaspoon liquid smoke

Measure ingredients into a small jar. Cover tightly and shake to blend.

Try to find Henderson's relish
It is similar to Worcestershire sauce but no anchovies.
