Is it possible to be on a high protein diet as a vegeterian?!


Question: Is it possible to be on a high protein diet as a vegeterian?
I know that there is a very long list of protein sources for vegeterians, but I am wondering if I can incorporate a HIGH protein diet, because I'll have to be giving up extremely high sources of protein like turkey, egg whites, and tuna, which I eat very regularly.

Vegetarian means no meat, if you're not eating animal PRODUCTS, it's called vegan.
But, yes, vegetarians are actually very healthy people. Make sure to include a lot of other things in your diet, like tofu, nuts, and such.
PS you can still drink milk and eat eggs unless you're going vegan.

Just saying that vegetarians do eat egg whites, eggs, and dairy- they ust don't eat meat or fish, or byproducts of those.
Perhaps you are thinking of lacto-vegetarian or vegan?

Ounce for ounce, roasted pepitas (9g) actually have more protein than 75% lean ground beef (7g).
Calorie for calorie, tempeh, extra-firm tofu, black beans, soymilk, scrambled eggs, skim milk, Boca vegan burgers, and Gimme Lean ‘sausage’ ALL have more protein than baked chicken breast tenders.

Besides that, the average American consumes more than 150% of their protein requirement. People grossly overestimate the amount of protein they need.

I track my intake of certain nutrients (like zinc) on SparkTeens, and I usually get about 65-75g protein a day (without effort), and I eat mostly vegan (eggs probably ~1-2x/month). I know that doesn't qualify as HIGH protein, I'm just saying it's not hard to get protein, especially if you eat plenty of dairy, eggs, beans, lentils, soy products, nuts, nut butters, seeds, fake meats, and certain grains (like quinoa).
It might be a bit harder until you get used to balancing vegetarian meals, but its definitely not impossible.



Why do you need to eat high protein? Are you a body builder? Too much protein isn't particularly good for you you know. You should only get the amount of protein you need. If you eat enough healthy foods, I'm sure you are getting enough as it is since most every food has protein. Make sure you incorporate beans/lentils and whole grains into your diet. Lets assume your body requires 50 grams of protein a day. If you ate 2 slices of whole grain bread with natural peanut butter and 100% fruit spread, that's roughly 20 grams right there.



Well, from what you're saying you sound like you plan on going on a vegan diet:

High sources of protein:
lima beans
black beans
red beans
soy beans (packaged as edamame)
tofu
tempeh
lentils
soy milk
soy yogurt
rice
quinoa

You really don't have to worry about not getting enough protein in your diet. Aside from all that, veggies have protien too.



You answered your own question. There is a very long list of protein sources for vegetarians, so you can eat things off that list and get a high amount of protein.

protein is a myth...we need enzymes and amino acids (that make protein on it's own)

Yes it's still possible if you include raw nuts, cottage cheese or tofu with every meal.
