Veganism and weight gain?!


Question: Veganism and weight gain?
I've heard a few people complain about weight gain after making the transition from meat eater to vegan and since my main reason for becoming vegan is for my health that does concern me. I normally do not consume too much during the day:
1) A small breakfast (cereal)
2) lunch (sandwich and a snack or just a snack)
3) dinner
4) 1-2 snacks
Usually not over 1200 calories.
Should I expect weight gain and/or bloating with a vegan diet?

When I transitioned from vegetarian to vegan, I did gain a little weight at first. This was mainly due to the fact that I was opening up my mind to different meal ideas that didn't contain any animal products, and I wanted to try all the different things I could within the first few days. I was also eating my fair share of vegan baked products, to test those out, too :P

I think the other vegans who gain weight did so because they may have been what you'd call a 'junk food vegan', you know the ones that consume nothing but chips and soft drink because they don't know what else to eat. They could have gained weight because of too many nuts/dried fruits too, because it is extremely easy to overdo both of those things.

I eat a diet that is almost all fruit and vegetables, and my weight has been pretty consistent (since I stopped my new to veganism binge), I have been losing a little weight here and there, though.



A while ago I went vegan - I'm back to being vegetarian now - but when I was on the vegan diet my weight went up by 6-7 pounds in a couple of weeks and the problem was the amount of oil that is used in some vegan recipes. Once I'd taken the oil out of the recipes I lost the weight and some more. I would say the only trouble I had with bloating was after I had ate tofu. What you've listed seems fine although make sure you get a proper lunch and if your active maybe increase the calorie content a little more.

So be careful about what is going into your food - especially if it's packaged vegan or a vegan recipe - for too much fat and sugar and you shouldn't have any problems. :)



Thats weird because I swear I lost weight and now just fat by going vegan. I went from 130 to 123 in a few months after going vegan. No calorie restriction, deprivation or anything just making better food choices. Now I am at a stable 128 but I eat more vegan junk food now than at the beginning :( I kinda slacked off from preparing my meals. I'm in the transition of going back to eating healthier. No sodas for me. I suppose if you eat too many carbs, you will gained weight. So try to stay away from refined bread, pastas, etc. Try to eat more whole grain instead.



i would make sure your getting enough protein. this is vital. if you arent getting it from meat i would suggest cottage cheese, yogurt and almond butter tastes really good. In terms of weight gain you will find that will gain less (lose more) if you are higher in calories as long as they are all natural foods. Try to include more nuts like almonds and walnuts on your salads



Dont lesson to the idots saying its not heathy, these dumb meat eaters think the ONLY way to get protein is by meat.
You can get it in beans, penutbutter and many more!

And dont worry you will gain at fisrt, but give your body time and it'll go away :D

I gained weight from eating more carbs, but after learning that it wasn't good for me, I changed my eating habits and lost it all:)

I would pay more attention to breakfast. You should consume more then.



when you strip your body from meat (protein) you will gain weight at first, but then most likely lose it.

I'm just going to let you know that if you're going vegan for your health... you're not actually helping your health in any way. your body needs the protein it gets from meats. sure, you can eat protein bars, drink milk, talk protein vitamins, etc. but you do not get the same types of protein and as much as when you do when you eat meat. There is no possible way to be your healthiest being a Vegetarian. I hope you will think about that before you completely turn vegan.
