Vegans: do you kill mosquitoes?!

Question: Vegans: do you kill mosquitoes?
No, this isn't a troll question. I have been vegan for 2 years, and I believe that all human and non-human animals have the right not to be our property for food, clothing and so forth.
I don't kill spiders. I'm a tiny bit arachnophobic - so if I find a daddy long-legs on the wall I'll just leave it be; huntsmen and other types I will capture and take outside.
Even flies and cockroaches I'm cool with - I've eaten unwashed veggies from the garden for ages and never got sick, my diet and lifestyle is really healthy, so I'm not too concerned about what these critters carry.
At the moment though I draw the line with any insect that will actively try to bite or sting me unprovoked - so yes I do still kill mosquitoes.
Some vegans say this is inconsistent or wrong; others say it is a reasonable action of self-defence. I'm interested to see what other vegans think about this question.

Answers:

Yes, I do. I have no problem killing the thing that's trying to live by SUCKING MY BLOOD! I'm vegan but that doesn't mean I would swim down in Florida and then say "Oh hi Mr. Crocodile! You want to rip my arm off? Oh sure! No problem! And I won't try to harm you back either because I'm vegan. Take a leg while you're at it".

Besides the health benefits, I'm vegan because I'm against animal exploitation. A mosquito flying in my house, biting me, and ending up dead by my swat is not animal exploitation. Being vegan also doesn't mean you're 100% "pure" of all animal products, etc. It just means you're taking a stand on a personal level and trying to do the best you can in the most practical ways to reduce the unnecessary torture, slaughter, etc of animals. So yes, I'm vegan. And yes, I kill blood sucking mosquitos.

I'm kinda like you. I let most insects live, but then again I don't have any insect phobias. However, I have 2 major exceptions. Roaches I find either near my food or in the bathroom. And ants on the counter when I'm trying to cook! haha Roaches don't usually bother me, but I've found some near me while I'm IN the shower and that was horrifying so I unfortunately kill them in those cases. Same with ants, they don't normally bother me but if they get all over my food I freak out. So don't worry, you're not alone :-)

7+ years veggie

I hate mosquitoes... they're the only bug I wish would just.. go away forever. -_-
They carry diseases, make you itch, can cause other issues with your skin, etc.

Sorry, I doubt anybody likes those pests...

Vegan for almost 1 year, vegetarian for 4... actually, 5 I think. Wow. O_O
*talking to self*

It is very wrong and you do not get the honor of calling yourself a Vegan. Please stop referring to yourself as one. You have a long way to go to realize that we can all live in this world without killing each other.

HINT: Where bug spray, light a candle, use an area net, or stay inside.

It's not at all inconsistent-

I, for instance, believe animals have the same rights not to be tortured and killed as do humans.

I also believe that, when being attacked, you are justified in defending yourself.

Yeah, I'm def. not that extreme. I could care less about horrifying bugs, such as mosquitoes and the worst of all...stinkbugs!!!

All bugs (except butterflies) can go extinct and I would be so HAPPY.

Vegan

Yah I am also a vegan who has and would kill a mosquito(s).

The only bugs I like are bumblebees, ladybugs, and butterflies. Mosquitoes DIE. If a roach is tiny, I'll kill it, but if it's big I turn into a chicken and make my boyfriend get it. Eek! As for spiders...they go back outside. As for things like hornets flying in the house in the summer (happens a lot in good ol' Texas) if I open the door and can get it to fly out - good. If not, you're dead b*tch.

I don't know, I guess I'm not quite vegan enough yet. It's a work in progress.

I don't intentionally kill mosquitoes. I just don't see the point. They're not trying to cause harm...they're just trying to get nourishment. :) Ha. But yeah, if I see one on my arm or something, I'll swat it away, but not slap it or anything in hopes that it dies. Mosquito bites aren't that bothersome anyway & I think the concerns about bird flu with them are over-hyped. Spiders don't bother me. (I think they're amazing, awesome creatures, actually.) Like you said, daddy long legs I'll just let be if they're in my house. Any other fast moving or jumping spiders I'll catch & release outside if I can. Cockroaches freak me out though. If I ever found one in my house I swear I'd have to move out. Flies aren't a big deal. I also catch & release them if one happens to get in in the summer with doors opening & closing constantly. Other than that, I would definitely kill a bee (or have someone else do it) if I found one in my house because I'm allergic, so a sting could literally kill me within minutes if I didn't have an epi pen (and in my house, I wouldn't have one, since I keep it in my purse so I'd have to be on my feet long enough to get to it if I was home alone). I avoid them at all costs outside in the summer.

does killing mosquitoes or insects really have anything to do as vegans?

vegans is a life style choice some ppl made. it is not a religion even if it were, if you think it was right, you can always leave and join another church.

i'm no vegan but my best buddy is. he has been a vegan for more than 20 years. ya, he is way ahead of a lot of us. anyway. he doesn't kill mosquitoes or any inserts in general since he doesn't see the need to. however, he does take necessary actions, include killing mosquitoes, when kids are in the house and they can't open the windows/doors to let them out. he lives in northern canada so having wide open windows during late fall when it is only 5°C outside isn't practical.

so he only kills them when he absolutely have to. in the summer, he always capture spiders, bees, even flies and release them back in the garden.

I don't see any reason why a vegan would be against killing mosquitoes. After all Trillions of insects are killed every year to plant and harvest fruits and vegetables. Pesticides are sprayed to kill them to keep them from damaging the crops. Birds, snakes, turtles, moles, raccoons, mice, deer, and many more animals are killed every year to plant, harvest, ship, store, and consume the very food that vegans eat. I will get thumbs downs for this but it is all the truth.
