Do people ever give you a hard time about being a vegetarian?!

Question: Do people ever give you a hard time about being a vegetarian?
So, I've been a vegetarian for a few months. I know some people think vegetarians are weirdo tree huggers and whatever and that's stupid. But no one had ever said anything negative to me about it before today. At school today in my Nutrition class, we had a project and everyone made a different dish and everyone got to try everything that was made. One of the things a girl made was like potato pancakes or something and she said "you're a vegetarian, aren't you?" I told her yes, then she told me there was no meat in her food so I got one and when I was walking away I heard her say to her friend in this snotty voice "I fed the *vegetarian*" I thought it was so immature!
So my question is has anyone ever been mean or rude to you about your lifestyle? If yes, what did they do?

Answers:

yes, people do! ecspecially my one friend, who used to always say im gunna "die" or get deathly sick if i dont eat meat. does that make sense? no. and the only reason she says that stuff is because their step dad goes hunting, and their family eats a lot of meat. also what annoys me is that whenever i see someone who hasn't talked to me about it yet, are like , "so why did u become a vegetarian?". ive probably answered that question 9,000 times, and its so annoying :(

I'm not a vegetarian I'm an omnivore. And yes people have been rude to me. I have been told I'm a murderer, heartless, and a few people have also said they wish I would die.

No Go Veg, this section is NOT just for vegetarians. This section is for ANYBODY to ask or answer questions about said subject.

Actually Chooty An, people do eat raw meat with no ill effects.

I don't call people names, my definition of a hard time and your definition must be different.

Deer hunter, Cliff and exsft frequently give vegetarians a hard time in this section but expect to be respected.

I thought this section was for veggies to share ideas?

@ Deer Hunter: Well you're the one complaining about vegetarians giving you a hard time when you do the same. Thats why I don't go to the hunting section. For what????

well, im not exactly a vegetarian, but i do eat different than other people and i am picky about what i eat. only my immediate family gives me a hard time, and a jerk that i know.

some of my friends are vegetarians, and a few of them only do it for the health benefits.

People that are insecure will always find someone to attack. Whether you dress different, talk different, or eat different, the only way they can make themselves feel better is to bring someone own. Stay true to your convictions. Those stupid comments from insensitive people need to be put in perspective. Pretend that they are jealous.

I remember once looking at a menu in a country pub to find an entirely carnivorous menu. I spoke to the old woman behind the bar about it, I told her I was vegetarian and she went "oh, I *am* sorry" like I'd just told her I had cancer or something. Different generation I guess...

yeah i get it all the time. i've been vegetarian for 4 years. and its not so much picking on me, but when people learn i've a vegetarian they're like "...why?" with a snide look on their face. So annoying. I don't implement my choices on you so don't do it on me.

I wouldn't eat anything she made again, those are the type of people that think its funny to slip some bacon grease in and not tell you about it. and yes people make snide remarks just like they do with anything that they do not understand.

Ohh yeah,.... I have been a vegetarian for about 5 months now.. :D...

The rudest thing a person has done is that they invited me to a party and only had non veg foods.. Even though they knew i am a vegetarian..

I do NOT understand they big deal....

UGH.....

i have some friends who like vegetarian. they are so healthy, they don't have any kind of health problem at all. vegetarian is very necessary thing in this age for healthy life.

of course :) only my family tho. i became a veggie person for 2 reasons 1. my mom forces me to eat and she doesn't if i say i am not eating because i dont eat meat. 2. because i think meat is kind of gross.

Yes, everyone gives me a hard time about being veg*n IDK why it's just their problem, I guess. I just say it doesn't matter what they say or think, it's our choice and we know why we are all veg*n...

No.

Lacto-ovo vegetarian since birth

No... but I'm 35, over 6 feet tall and muscular.

taste good

People get excited or have snide look because science see vegetarianism as abnormal. Biologically human are omnivorous, opportunistic and general feeders therefore not specifically adapted to eat and digest either meat or plant primarily. This concept is very strongly rooted in present day societies. Again human differ from other omnivorous animals, as people do not consume meat and fish in raw form. These all naturally raise questions if we try to be different. This problem will not arise if you market yourself as a strong follower of Hinduism, Jainism or some sects of Buddhism because your habit is something tied to a religious belief and there is general understand among people.

I'm sorry you had to endure that. But do realize that people are insensitive and often say things rude when they don't understand. Ignorance is not an excuse.

If you have chosen to be a vegetarian that is up to you and you alone. No one has the right to tell you that you can't be a vegetarian. My only concerns about being a vegetarian (my daughter was for a year) is making sure you get enough proteins thru nuts or legumes.

Going back to your original situation - It is not what is said to bring us down that matters, but how we hold our head high and continue to look forward. Small minded people will never get far in this world.

only if they act morally superior , then I let them have it. I tell them that a chicken is just a machine that turns grain into meat , so there is nothing wrong with eating a chicken.
