Do you think I'm doing good as a vegan? My mom is freaking out. Help!?!

Question: Do you think I'm doing good as a vegan? My mom is freaking out. Help!?
So I went vegan about 2 weeks ago. I've lost 5 pounds since then and my skin is amazing! I'm absolutely loving my diet and I love trying new foods.
But, of course, my mom is extremely worried. She was fine when I was vegetarian but she thinks that I'm ridiculously unhealthy. She's "threatened" to take me to my doctor to get me tested for anemia again (she did it last year but I was fine) and thinks she can force me to eat animal foods again.
I personally think I'm doing pretty good. Here is what I ate today, what do you think?
I eat two small dinners, so like 4 mini meals throughout the day instead of 3 giant ones.

Breakfast: Strawberries, plain bagel with peanut butter, water
Lunch (at school, I just snacked on these throughout the school day): cheerios dry cereal, grapes, baby carrots, water
Dinner 1 (after school): black beans, chopped celery, and flax seeds wrapped in a tortilla, soy milk
Dinner 2 (after practice): steamed broccoli, whole wheat bread with peanut butter, an orange, walnuts, water
Snacks: Cantaloupe, glass of soy milk

I also take a calcium supplement usually 2-3 days a week because sometimes I'm a little low in calcium. My soy milk has vitamin B12 in it. What do you think?
I'm 15, 5'5'', and 138 pounds.

you are doing good monica.....tell your mom.....more than 70 percent people are vegetarian in india and they are healthy......you can try adding pulses in your meal tooo....they are full of protein.....try lentil soups,,,rice and other indian vegie food

So if your mother takes you to a doctor and you check out okay what have you got to worry about. You may be all right for a while but variety is important. Eventually you have to find what works for you provided you stay healthy.

Don't forget rice, noodles, pasta, lentils, chick peas, all good staples to base a meal around.

You might want to look at some dark green leafy veg too, spinach is a good one. They're loaded with iron, which should help placate your mother's anaemia fixation.

Sounds like a pretty good diet to me, you could try adding a few more greens though, spinach, lettuce, onion, just try to vary it a bit to stay healthy. You are certainly not underweight, good luck

That seems pretty healthy, but why not take a calcium supplement every day, along with a multivitamin with iron?

It sounds great!! But if you're talking about "Honey nut cheerios" those are not vegan. All in all, that seems extremely healthy.

Dear answerer "guess who", please, if you are not a vegan then don't try to tell people whether or not they'll "have enough energy". Are you kidding me? Go vegan and you'll see how much more energy you'll consistently have. And avg Joe: going vegan is much better for the environment than driving a hybrid, so no there arent many other ways to better be "eco friendly".

Anyways, it sounds like you're doing fantastic. Don't listen to your mom. Not being vegan herself is her loss. Don't cave in; the blood will be on your hands if you do.

It sounds like you're doing great! But you might get a little bored with your "typical" meals here, especially if you eat the same meals over and over again. And I know personally that it's when I'm bored with my food that I'm tempted to eat something with cheese or egg in it! Maybe add some quinoa (which is a protein super food) and definitely more leafy greens if you're concerned with Calcium.

But don't let criticism get you down. Let compassion lead you!

You seem to be doing pretty good! =)

Just make sure you always take a multivitamin, which should help in case you don't get enough iron. Also take in consideration your omega fatty acids, which are for brain and heart health. You can get this through walnuts, but mostly flax-seed whether it's in oil, supplement or grounded form.

Keep up the good work. :)

Personally, I'd starve eating as little as you do. But I exercise a lot, so I eat a lot too.
Your weight seems fine.

> Breakfast: Strawberries, plain bagel with peanut butter, water
Strawberries don't digestively mix very well with bagel and peanut butter.

> cheerios dry cereal
These are disgusting, don't eat them. Eat some real food.

> grapes, baby carrots, water
Just don't eat the carrots and grapes together... again, not a very good digestive mix. (that just means they won't fully digest properly and flatulence if often a result).

> Dinner 1 (after school): black beans, chopped celery, and flax
> seeds wrapped in a tortilla, soy milk
Sounds fine. Why not add some whole organic rice or quinoia or something?

> Dinner 2 (after practice): steamed broccoli, whole wheat bread with
> peanut butter, an orange, walnuts, water
Just, don't eat the orange with the rest of that. Really, didn't anyone tell not to mix certain foods as it will lead to indigestion? Keep fruit as a separate meal.

> Snacks: Cantaloupe, glass of soy milk
Just not together. Beans and cantaloupe don't mix well.

I'd add this to your diet as well: omega 3&6s (oils: flax, hemp, pumpkin, coconut, extra virgin olive...), more dark leafy greens, nutritional yeast, ...

Try oatmeal for breakfast. You can put things in your oatmeal just as you would with rice such as: peas, carrot, veggie meat, soy sauce, nutritional yeast, and top with oil.

It sounds generally healthy to me. You didn't specify amounts, but as long as you're not undereating, your diet sounds pretty good. It does sound like you might enjoy some more homecooked-type stuff. Can you cook up some good food at home? There are lots of great vegan cookbooks out there.

If your mother wants to take you to the doctor to be tested for anemia, that's no biggie. As long as you're getting enough iron, there shouldn't be a problem. And if you aren't getting enough iron, you *should* know about it. (That doesn't mean you'd need to eat animal products, just more veggie food that contains iron.)

You need more meat.
Or at least something to provide you with some energy. Maybe a fruit with lots of sugar... like watermelon, for example. Otherwise it seems like you'll have no energy in your day. At least to me.

vegan is a turn off, there are better ways to be healthy, humane, and eco-friendly.
