Do you guys think being a vegetarian/vegan is healthier than being a meat eater?!

Question: Do you guys think being a vegetarian/vegan is healthier than being a meat eater?
So I have both meat eaters and vegetarians in my family. A good of amount of my family is Buddhist so thats why. But the meat eaters and vegetarians have all lived past 95 and were healthy. They died around 98-100 also. Pretty much the same thing.... Longevity is pretty common in my family for some reason. My grandpa also smoked every day and he died at 94. The older generations also grew up in poor rural areas also, so eating rats and dogs and other animals was common. So I really don't see how either diet makes you healthy or unhealthy. Doesn't make any sense actually. What do you guys think?

A vegan diet, done properly, is best for optimal health. Meat in and of itself is unhealthy, not to mention how they process it. Meat is a known carcinogen and is sometimes treated with carbon monoxide. As far as dairy and eggs go, they are loaded with fat and cholesterol and the "3 a day" campaign was based on no sound evidence. Also, cows milk, while it does have calcium, is not properly absorbed by our bodies because we were not made to drink it. Therefore, we do not get the proper calcium from it. Legumes and other vegan items are actually chock full of protein. Kashi makes a cereal with 13g of protein in it, while an egg only has 6g. However, it should be noted this cereal is not vegan because it contains honey. But they make vegan cereals with 5 or 6 grams of protein in them. Plus there are supplements that can be taken if one is worried about protein intake. Meat is extremely unhealthy for the body and can cause heart disease, obesity, e-coli (since the animals feces are processed in with the meats) and the list goes on! Not to mention it is cruel and unnecessary since we were made as herbivores. We, as humans, made a conscious decision to start eating meat. We didn't always start off that way.

You can't make a scientific conclusion like that based on a few people, what we would call "anecdotal evidence." It's likely that your family just has exceptionally good genes... although it's important to remember to heed medical advice anyway because that doesn't make every individual in your family invincible.

What does lead to scientific conclusions are large research studies, which have conclusively proved that smoking is a health hazard to many people. They may not have proved that vegetarians are healthier, but they have proved that most people should consume high amounts of grains and vegetables and NOT high amounts of meat and animal products for optimal health.

I personally am pretty sure that vegan diets are healthiest, but I am a vegan for animals so I'm biased. We'll have to wait for better research.

It depends on the foods you choose with either diet. An omnivore who chooses fish, whole grains and the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables will be healthier than a vegetarian who lives on pastries and chips.
DNA definitely also has a role in health and longevity, as does how physically active you are.
But a vegetarian who eats a healthy diet and exercises regularly will be healthier than an omnivore most of the time, simply because their diet is so much lower in saturated fat.

Meat benifits

any doctor or nurse would agree because they usually tell people to cut out meat for health. I've never heard a doctor tell someone to eat more meat

Vegetarian

vegans are alot healthier then meat eaters.
if they live a healthy life style and eat the right foods then yes they are much healthier.
meat and animal produces have been linked with osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity and the list goes on.
the reason why we hear things like milk is needed for strong bones and meat is needed for iron is because the meat and dairy industry pretty much control what we see and hear about them, they are a multi billion dollar business, so they can afford to manipulate us and what we hear and see about the meat and dairy industry.
they dont care about peoples health, all they care about is money, dirty, dirty money!

I think you're right.

You can have a good diet, or a bad diet, irrespective of whether you eat meat or not. You can't make sweeping statements like "a vegan diet is healthiest" or "vegetarians don't get enough protein" (well, you can if you're an idiot). It's nonsensical.

Chances you bring down for cancer as vegetarian alone: 40%
chances of Cardiovascular disease by 35%
And if you go vegan, you reduce chance by 46%!
Those are just 2 examples!

longevity is in the genes i believe.as a veggie i get my protein from quorn type foods but as to which is healthier i would say that veggie is,for the animals of course, otherwise its about evens ;)

i think it hardly matter in age factor. it depends upon ur life style ie. how much u burn calories, the quantity u eat. But i still feel that vegeterian is a heathier man

Generally, yes, but you can be healthy or unhealthy as a veggie or meat-eater. It all depends on your diet.

A vegetarian/vegan diet is healthier than a meat diet.

OF course, vegan is healthier.so we all should be vegan to live a long life.

Limits of eating meat will be healthier

It is. Fact

Well, it's true, some people can abuse the sh*t of of themselves and still live a long life.

But, what if you were not just abusing yourself, but also your fellow creatures, your surrounding environment, your fellow human beings, your children, and so forth? Sure, you lived a long healthy life, but you left behind environmental damage, tortured and slaughtered animals, poor and abused farm and factory workers, and so forth.

You can live a fully selfish life, or you can live a life where you respect all other living things and think about your own impact on your surroundings. I guarantee your smoking grandfather was not healthy. He may have lived to 94, but imagine if he didn't smoke. But the length of your life has a lot more to do with genetics than people think it does and less to do with diet and health etc. But, living a healthier life will also allow you to have a more robust life. Most people in past 70 are crippled by their own poor lifestyle, diabetes, osteoporosis... they are falling apart from the inside out, walking with a cane or being wheeled around, their minds going. Healthy people will still have active bodies and minds when they are older. Studies have also shown that people live longer when in their life they have experienced 'hard times' -- low amounts of food etc. The more people eat, the shorter their lives are. Seems the human body is designed to deal with periods without food, but not periods of gluttony. Anyway, generally speaking, you just have to look around and you see people in their 50s that are already falling apart from their lifestyle. Your family's elders probably didn't start eating very well (i.e. processed modern foods etc.) until past WWII. Their early life had already affected them and established their base health level. They probably ate little, and worked hard. Their bodies learnt to squeeze every little bit of nutrition out of that food that it could. Later on in life, they probably didn't eat frozen hungryman dinners and junk like that, but ate more as they did when they were younger.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

no, you get much more protein from meat in my opinion. i am referring to "hardcore" vegetarians, i guess, who don't eat or drink animal products such as milk. milk has protein, good protein source. i think meat in small amounts is very healthy, especially if broiled or grilled properly. red meat, i have learned, is not healthy. or, healthy in VERY small amounts. also, some vegetarians do not eat eggs, which is a good source of protein. so, if you are vegetarian, get good, true protein sources.

No meat in small portions is healthy, vegetarians and vegans are no healthier and actually have a harder time getting all the protein and stuff they miss in meat
