Yet he enjoys working at the slaughterhouse, and thinks it funny to torture the animals.

I would be very frightened to be around anyone who thought it was funny to torture something. However, if he took the job because he needed a job and that was the only one available, I would accept it. My father worked in a slaughter house for a while, my best friend comes from a long line of butchers, and some friends of the family are avid hunters. I love them nonetheless for it. I understand that they love and respect animals as much as I do, but that everyone has their own definition of right and wrong, and that my wrongs aren't the same as theirs.
Vegans are not obsessed with a label or a diet; they are genuinely concerned about cruelty to animals. So this man who thinks it's funny to torture animals, and assumingly does so, is not vegan, even if he technically eats a vegan diet.
I am a vegan and obviously wouldn't date him, but I don't think any animal- or self-respecting person would either.

I'm not Vegan but "HELL NO". I wouldn't date anyone who enjoys torturing animals. My best friend has to kill animals for her pets & she's Vegan. She doesn't enjoy it but it's her responsibility. That I can understand but killing or torturing an animal because they find it humorous or fun. Can anyone say sociopath or perhaps even psychopath?
