Answers:
Vegetarians don't eat gelatin. Gelatin is basically mashed up or burned animal bones used in some foods such as Jello, marshmallows, ect.
You just always have to check the label to be sure. I've even found gelatin in a can of sunflower seeds!
No, sorry. Stuff that requires killing an animal isn't vegetarian. You could argue that it is vegetarian to eat lots of things if you go by the "the animal wasn't killed JUST for x" rule. While animals are killed primarily for their meat, they are also killed for a number of other things. You could argue, for example, that any type of organ meat is vegetarian because the animal wasn't killed JUST for the organs. But, as you know, organs require that an animal is killed. The same goes for animal fat. Pigs aren't usually killed just for lard. However, lard is still part of a pig's body. Take the argument further and you could even try to say that meat itself is vegetarian. Slaughterhouses generally aren't huge fans of waste. A cow is slaughtered for its flesh, yes, but also for its bones, skin, organs, and even blood. Because the cow wasn't slaughtered just for its meat, its meat is vegetarian? That doesn't make much sense.
Gelatin is no different. The fact that few people slaughter animals specifically for their collagen doesn't mean that collagen is suitable for a vegetarian. Gelatin isn't vegetarian. Sorry. As an ovo-lacto vegetarian, the question to ask yourself is this: did an animal *have* to die to make this food? If it did, then the food is not vegetarian.
If you want to be a vegetarian, you should avoid gelatin, especially if your motivations relate to animal welfare. Stick with (sounds gross, but isn't) seaweed-based substitutes like agar and carrageen. Some kosher gelatins are vegetarian, but many aren't, so be careful with that. Good luck!
You are the only one who can decide if it's ok to eat. Cows are killed for the whole package, not just their flesh, their skin, their bones.
Some might consider it a harmless byproduct but in reality, the monetary value of byproducts adds to the monetary value of killing the cow. The cow isn't specifically killed for the gelatin, but it's also not just killed for the flesh or skin.
It's true that they would probably not kill an animal just for gelatin and throw the rest away. You could say the same thing about hooves, brains, liver, or intestines. However, purchasing any of these things supports the slaughter industry, makes it more profitable, makes meat cheaper.
In addition, there has been some concern about gelatin and BSE. Wikipedia says this has been disproven: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelatin#Saf… However, I have found too often that regulatory agencies are too pro-industry, so I am always suspicious. I had read that a European vegetarian who ate gelatin died of the human form, CJD. http://icbirmingham.icnetwork.co.uk/0100…
But I don't avoid gelatin from fear, I avoid it because it is part of a dead animal and supports the slaughter industry.
I'm not one to nitpick definitions, and I am glad for what you do, but I don't think you can really be considered vegetarian if you are eating animal body parts.
How do you think the gelatin was retrieved from the bones of the animal without killing it?
It isn't ok for vegetarians to eat gelatin.
But you seem to really want to, and you are clearly trying to give yourself permission, so maybe you aren't really a vegetarian, strict or otherwise.
Eat gelatin if you choose, but it's not considered vegetarian. It comes from a dead animal and therefore is a slaughter by-product, and not vegetarian.
I wouldn't eat gelatine but I am a strict vegetarian, really you shouldn't eat or use any product that has come from a dead animal. There is a veggie alternative available in health food shops - vege gel / agar agar.
No it's still classed a meat. You can get alternatives but you can't eat food like Harbio and sweets which are chewy etc.
Vegetarians eat eggs. Vegans don't
a few years of being a Vegetarian myself
no if ur vegetarian its still animal bones its an animal so u cant eat marshmallows sorry
but u can try the sweet n sara vegan marshmallows u can order online even
if you eat eggs, you're not a vegetarian. you're lacto-ovo. and seeing as how you don't mind eating eggs would be animals if they weren't killed so you can eat them then it really shouldn't matter to you about eating gelatin which is animal product.
basically it doesn't matter what you eat. the reasons you have for being a vegetarian should set the rules for what you eat. gelatin IS an animal product. but so is sugar.
It is alright for you to eat gelatine, but of the vegetarian kind only. There are gelatine leaves that you soak and add to recipes that call for them. It is available in all supermarkets.
No they are not killed just for their bones, but i bet they chop off their hooves when they run short of gelatine and let them hop about on bare bones, though.
Just joking,i couldn't help it. Sorry
