How to get protein? Vegetarian?!

Question: How to get protein? Vegetarian?
I have recently decided to become a vegetarian. I am 16 and my mom says i need to have pleanty of protein in my diet if I don't eat meat. So what are the best foods to get protein from? And should I take protein supplements and which ones should I take?

p.s. I don't eat fish.. and I was confused as to why some vegetarians do.. if you could answer that it would be an extra +

thanks XD

Answers:

You don't need protein supplements - only body-builders need (or think they need) those.

If you are eating enough food, you will most likely be getting enough protein, as there is protein in nearly every food (except water, oil, salt, sugar and any other obvious ones). Good vegetarian sources include legumes (pulses, dhal - gram, beans, lentils, peas, peanuts, chickpeas, etc.), grains (cereals - wheat, rye, millet, maize, barley, sorghum, ragi, brown rice, etc.), nuts, seeds (quinoa, amaranth, chia, sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, buckwheat, etc.), and if you're going to include these - eggs and/or dairy products.

Vegetarians don't knowingly and/or deliberately eat animals, so therefore vegetarians don't eat fish. There are a few people around who don't know that, and incorrectly call themselves vegetarians, and another few who know it, but still insist on lying about it. Feel welcome to correct them. You'd be doing everyone a favour.

Please see my source for information on good sources of protein for vegetarians, as well as a few different kinds of vegetarians. The reason some vegetarians eat fish is related to the different reasons why vegetarians don't eat meat. Some consider red meat to be ecologically inefficient, but fish are more ecologically efficient.

You do not need protein supplements. The protein needs for anybody but a competitive athelete range from 40 to 70 grams of protein a day. Check the protein contents of a few foods, and you will see that two or three servings of beans a day will be all the protein you need, even if you get zero other protein.

Many non-vegetarians make a big deal out of protein, supported by intense marketing from people who want to sell you a supplement. You are more likely to have problems with your iron intake, but if you look up iron-rich foods, you will see that this is easy to take care of.

Actually, the average American consumes more than twice the amount of protein they need. It's a myth that vegetarians have a hard time getting protein, it's actually extremely easy.
To find out how much protein YOU need, multiply your weight by .4
Ex) I weight about 145 pounds, so I need about 58 grams of protein.
You really really do not need a protein supplement. Eggs (if you eat them), nuts/seeds, beans, and some vegetables are good sources of protein.
Try this website: http://www.sparkteens.com it's actually a weight-lose website for teens, but just enter your information and go to the nutrition section and it will have custom nutrient recommendations for you (for you to maintain weight).
Vegetarians do NOT eat fish. I know it can get confusing when some say they do. The correct term for somebody who only eats fish and no other meat is Pescitarian, but most just call themselves "vegetarian who eats fish". I know it's very misleading, but it's something true vegetarians sort of have to deal with.

My answer will just be to send you to a bunch of different sites, sorry...

Here is a (sourced) explanation I wrote about vegan protein: http://expandingcircle.wordpress.com/200…

Here are two terrific and pertinent podcasts. One on protein: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Vegetaria…
...and one on Teenagers who want to go veg and are having trouble convincing their parents: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Vegetaria…

You do not need protein supplements. Protein is something that people worry about until they learn the facts about it; then they know they will have no problem getting plenty of protein. Meat-eaters usually get way too much protein, and it isn't good for them.

Hah, there's been a lot of argument here lately about "vegetarians" who eat fish. Everyone pretty much agrees that vegetarians do not eat fish, but we disagree about why some people who eat fish say they are vegetarian - I think they're mistaken wannabees, but many others think they're lying posers. I guess you'd have to ask them.

eat soya bean preparations--they are taste-wise better, and have a higher protein content than meat. Only protein of animal origin that is unbeatable is EGG !!! Fish is , of course an animal. Some people do cheating by saying that they don't kill fish but just take it out of water. Egg can be called vegetarian--if it is a poultry egg and is not going to produce a chicken!!!

Your mom is right. You need protein. The good news is, vegetables have tons of protein. Legumes (beans, lentils, peanut butter, etc.) are also great sources of protein. Whole grains too. If you eat generally healthy stuff, you're going to get enough protein. Protein supplements are probably not necessary but you be the judge.

Vegetarians don't eat fish. :)

Vegetarians dont eat fish, people that eat fish and call themselves vegetarians are liars.

It isnt hard to get protein on a vegetarian diet, beans, rice and pasta are good sources of it.

Pescaterians, not Vegetarians, eat fish.

Vegans also don't eat Eggs or Cheese.

But, as a Vegetarian, I get most of my protein from Eggs, Cheese, nuts, soy, wheat gluten, and seeds.

I get most of my protein from Chobani Greek Yogurt. Every cup of yogurt contains 16 grams of protein and only an average of 130 calories. You can also get protein from nuts, cheese and eggs.

Vegetarian

Tofu/soy, beans, lentils, certain veggies.. and eggs if you still eat those. People who still eat fish but no other meat are called pescetarians. Not vegetarians.

2 liters evian n 4 clementines n 2 blue bottle coffees then 4 fillets dover sole meuniere.
sundays brunch bruschetta on panera french baguette instead of the fish.
