What do you think of people converting their pets onto a vegetarian diet!!?!

Question: What do you think of people converting their pets onto a vegetarian diet!!?
Answers:

While dogs CAN eat as omnivores, it is not recommended by most vets - they should have a diet consisting of meat - it is healthier for their fur, their muscles, etc.

Cats however CANNOT digest vegetables, they totally rely on meat for their dietary needs. They cannot live long if they are deprived of meat. If people force their cats to be vegetarians or vegans, they may as well just take a gun and shoot them, because they are killing them.

The digestive systems of cats and dogs is totally different from humans, what is good for us, is not always good for them.

Also, I don't know if people know but chocolate is totally toxic to dogs, it can kill them if ingested for long periods of time - while one chocolate will not kill them, giving them chocolate through the months and years will kill them.

I am a vegan, we have 4 dogs and 3 cats, all of which eat a fresh food diet including organic meat. I think there is more danger in feeding prepackaged crap dog food than there is feeding a well planned vegetarian diet for dogs, cats Im not sure about. I believe cats do need meat but I know there are vegetarian food companies that are creating quality diets for cats and dogs. If you are concerned about what dogs and cats are not eating, maybe you should be concerned about what they ARE eating which is leftover rubbish in most households. If a food stuff has a five year shelf life something is wrong.

I think its stupid. If a person wants to be a vegetarian than that's fine but some animals need meat to have a proper diet and without they don't get adequate nutrition. It does depend on the pet though, dogs for example are omnivores (eat veg and meat) but cats are carnivores (only eat meat/fish) so it'd be bad for the cat's health to suddenly have to eat a vegetarian diet. It would probably just kill more birds and other prey because it was hungry so it wouldn't even work. So yeah I think its wrong, people shouldn't force their beliefs onto their animals when it could risk their health.

Mom is a vet

It depends on the animal. Some pet animals are perfectly happy with a vegetarian diet - not too many carnivorous horses or parrots.

But as you have already decided that 'dogs should have a meat diet', 'dogs...should be kept that way' and that you don't believe studies that you didn't take part in or have any input into, and you 'doubt that a working dog would survive long on a veg/vegan diet' without citing any actual statistical evidence, then I don't think that you are asking a question rather you are seeking approval for a point of view that you've already decided on.

Nice to have such an open mind.

I know that dogs and cats are naturally carnivores, but dogs actually are very flexible and I've actually heard vegans share success stories about converting their dogs to vegan diets. I've even heard how one vegan's dog lived 5 years longer than the vet said he would and they were amazed.
But cats? No. Their diet needs to be left alone.
Honestly I would probably never convert my dogs to any other diet besides their standard dog-food-from-Target diet. I'm more worried about what I eat, personally.

totally ridiculous. i'm a veggie and would never give a meat eating animal a veggie diet. if they've evolved to eat meat then that's what you should feed them. Being vegetarian is your choice not your pets. if you want your pet to be a veggie then buy one that already is - rabbit, chinchilla, hamster etc!!!

common sense !!

depends what kind of pet it is....? dogs and cats = not good. basically means youd rather have some other animal saved than treat your own pet right....sure makes sense if youre a vegetarian/vegan. if one is a vegetarian/vegan and doesnt want to feed their carnivore meat, then they shouldnt have a pet like that cause thats cruel.

NO!
Humans have enough morals and enough alternatives that it is ok for them to be vegetarian. But it is unfair to make the choice for another animal, especially when the alternatives aren't good enough yet.

As others have said, it depends on the animal. You shouldn't try to feed carnivores (eg, cats) a vegetarian diet, they simply can't synthesise the necessary nutrients they need to be healthy.

Worse could happen and the RSPCA may agree. Ask a vet.

Depends, rabbits would be fine but carnivores like cats and dogs it is pure stupidity as there meat eaters pure and simple.

My hamster is jewish, and so i circumsised him,
My pig is muslim so he cannot eat pork, and he hates that hamster

It depends on the type of pet. For example, dogs and cats aren't naturally vegetarian.

I think it depends on the animal - dogs is fine but cats need meat man. It can be cruel, it can be allright.

i am a vegetarian
my cat isnt
my dog isnt

my nan

completely stupid
