How to eat fish again after being vegetarian for 10 years?!

Question: How to eat fish again after being vegetarian for 10 years?
I'm been vegetarian for 10 years, and I'm looking to go back to eating fish, but not sure what the health implications are.

Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks in advance.

Fish is the easiest to digest so it shouldn't be that bad. It's not like you're eating a massive hamburger.
A couple years ago I ate fish after I was vegetarian for about 6 months, and I felt completely fine. Although I did feel guilty and restarting 'counting' how long I was vegetarian lol.
But just stick to something light at first, small amount. Keep it consistent, like 1 serving a day until you can soon eat as much as you want without feeling sick.

Fish shouldn't be any different from eating any other kind of meat.

I know a few vegetarians (no meat at all) who have gone back to eating meat after several years, and they've had to go extremely slowly because their bodies aren't used to it. Meat is an extremely concentrated source or protein, and eating it after several years w/out it can make you extremely physiologically ill. So go extremely slowly. One friend would start with really thin slices of meat (although I don't know if you can get thin fish... maybe sushi?).

I've been a vegetarian for 13 years, and twice (after 3 years, and after 8 years), I've accidentally eaten a bite of meat or chicken broth, and gotten extremely ill.

"anyone who gets sick because they were vegetarian and then ate meat is having a psychological reaction. Either they are afraid they will get sick, or feel bad because the reason they went vegetarian is in the back of their mind. anxiety and panic has more power over your body than you'd think."

Totally untrue! I was brought up vegetarian and after eating a "mushroom" kofte was violently ill only to find out three days later that it had been made with animal products and then deep fried along with all the meat kofte. As a cultural rather than 'animal cruelty' veggie, I'm not totally opposed to eating meat - but my stomach is.

My mother went back to fish after 10 years and just started small, having only pre-prepared white fish. Good luck

Is there any particular reason why you're going to eat fish?

You should experience no, or minimal problems from the change. There may be some mild gastrointestinal problems like a tummy ache or diarrhea for a short period. Most short-term problems related to changing are in your mind. However, if you were going from vegan to drinking milk, you could have more problems due to the lactose in milk, and the way your body produces the lactase enzyme.

The real problem with fish and health is that they are some of the most polluted animals on the planet, and that long-term we are overfishing our oceans to meet the demands of an overpopulation. That has an impact on the environment, and so our long-term health is also a problem. Fish is so polluted, especially certain types of fish, that governments issue warnings for pregnant women and for children to limit the amount of fish they eat. They also warn against eating too much fish caught locally. Farmed fish presents other problems, both from an ethical and health standpoint.

Almost all fish contains traces of MERCURY. Mercury is toxic to your body. Some have more than others. I'm vegan, but I think it's a real tragedy for people who do eat fish, for the fish themselves, and for other animals who eat them, that we have polluted our world so much that it's become unhealthy, and that we have overfished the world's waters. If you're going to eat fish, learn a bit and be extremely selective on the types and amounts of fish you eat.

Fish contain dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls that are sometimes so high that products like fish oil are recalled off the market, and warnings are raised about fish. You would think that farmed fish would contain less, but the opposite is the case.

This is really something to consider if you're going to be eating fish regularly. It's a much bigger concern than just the short-term discomfort of switching your diet.

Here's a sampling of a warning by a state in my own country http://www.epi.state.nc.us/epi/fish/cont…
http://www.epi.state.nc.us/epi/fish/curr…

Look for warnings from your own local, state/national governments, and then wonder what they're not telling you.

It makes me sad to see someone go back to eating animals though. Fish is not necessary for health. If you're worried about Omega-3s, you can easily get it from fortified foods (pastas or cereals maybe) or supplements. The free info on the internet or from vegkit.org can help you.

But yeah, I still have to tell you the truth: changing your diet isn't really going to hurt you.

I'm a vegan and I do my research

As most vegetarians base there diet on morals I would suggest you stay clear from supermarket and tinned produce. Source all your fish needs from local small/family ran fishmongers, it may mean that you have to travel or pay more but morally it is the best choice!!

Try different types of fish, cod is struggling where pollack is abundant!! Watch out for farmed fish as the way they are raised destroys the ecosystem for other species by spreading disease and blocking their breeding grounds!!

Eat it as you would your normal meal, without thinking about it. There are no health implications. The fact that you are looking to start eating fish again, shows that your body is lacking certain goodness that you get from it.

Give it a try.

I was a very strict one for almost 6 years,But felt like eating turkey and prawns for Christmas. My neighbour satisfied my craving.and nothing happened,I was pregnant with my first Son,

try to see a doctor on this subject.do you have enough variety in your vegetarian lifestyle?why not try the one-word-a-search-idea with words such as: raw, breakfast, lunch, sandwich, snack, dinner, tofu, dessert, and smoothie in the search box of :

vegetarian times at http://www.vegetariantimes.com

and veg web at http://vegweb.com

You shouldn't have any problems whatsoever. Perhaps just start with a mild fish, like halibut. Maybe not start with something really rich like shrimp or any other shellfish. Trout? Salmon? And just have a small serving to see how you react.

I was raised as a vegetarian. I had no ill effects from eating meat.

If you can go fish yourself, you will get lovely fresh fish. Learn how to choose fish. My partner comes from a professional fishing family and I never dare to choose fish. I bomb out, he picks really good stuff or we don't have fish.

Am off fishing in the morning. Caught 7 whiting last time :)

Atlantic Salmon from a supermarket is a good bet, or get it frozen. Start with a small serve, grill and serve with tartare sauce and salad. Or make homemade chips - chop a potato, sprinkle with herbs and spices and bake. Better than fried, fattening chips.

Wild fish is becoming rare but it's the best for you. Make sure it's cooked throughly and chew well to watch for bones.

If you think it might upset your stomach, start with 1 ounce of steamed, undressed white fish, like halibut. Wait a week and see how it affects you.

I suggest you hold your nose while you're doing it. Believe it or not ... fish actually stink! (It's probably not their fault that they haven't heard of deodorants.) The health implication of that is gagging, and possibly retching and vomiting.

you shouldnt have any problems. fish is easy to digest and easy so eat . its not like chomping into a huge steak which will lie very heavily inside you for days. start off slowly with small boneless pieces. i make fish cakes with tuna. good luck

Well, first off you stop posting in this section because you're not vegetarian anymore. Then, go pick up some Tilapia at Walmart, cook that up, then put it in your mouth. You'll get sick, but that's what you want.

Why would you want to do that???? Fish feel pain along with crabs, lobsters, etc....

Vegetarian since 1998

I think to eat sushi. The raw salmon, not the fatty fried stuff is good. Salmon comes to mind. Steam it or something. Including nuts and veg and rice..

just eat it if you want to. there are no health risks associated with vegetarians going back to eating meat after not eating it for a long time.

Just go down to your local Chip Shop, and get some Fish & Chips, lovely.

Well its food. I would put some in your mouth, chew, and swallow.

jus eat it like u ate d vege.s,or...r u afraid of d bones??? don't worry, dey r totally harmless
i hv a lot of frens hu says dey r vegeterian, but dey eat almost everything. nothing happens 2'em
so.no worries, b happy with wat u get!!!
