If the World Became Vegetarian...?!

Question: If the World Became Vegetarian...?
Would we all survive? I am wondering because I was thinking of becoming a vegetarian. Would it be healthier and would everyone live longer or would we have to evolve to cope with the lack (perhaps?) of nutrition. What would happen to the animals and land that were to be slaughtered and what would happen to agriculture? I am just wondering :)

Most likely we would. Most of our planet's vegetation goes to feeding the cattle we breed for meet. If none of that existed (eating meat, factory farming) then all those vegetables could feed everybody.
There would also be much more open land for use, since so much land is wasted for growing cattle.

Estimates on current food production states that only approximately 6-8 billion people can be fed adequately using current crop farming methods. Arable land for human grade crops is also and has always been limited and not likely to increase dramatically enough to make a significant difference. .

Ironically, the people who have the so called "solutions" are people who are not and have never been involved in mass food production (they are also some of the people who often ask "What can I eat?/What am I allowed to eat"? I shudder to think that the world's food problems are in the hands of people who cannot even have dinner without a consensus based on "rules" that do not exist). They think that farmers (like me) can always just plant more in land that is currently being used for animal agriculture or that we are "holding back" and can easily cultivate more of our land currently not in use. That is simply not the case. In fact, a lot of the land we use now for crop farming is in danger of being depleted because these were converted from natural grasslands and not suited for continuous farming especially with crops that are not native to the land. The reason why land is being used for animal farming is because it is not suited for crop farming in the first place. Simply out, I am currently on max production and I cannot plant more crops even if I wanted to. Sure sustainability is always there, that's an inherent quality with crop farming but increase in production is no longer a possibility unless I switch to GM|O crops which I will not do.

But really, who can predict what will occur in a future based on a scenario that will not happen anyway? History is full of "events" and changes that were supposed to make things better but ended up being major disasters.

No, there would still be hunger, because capitalism allows for someone to have as little as 1 cent and as much as 1 trillion dollars.

There would still be rich people and homeless people, regardless.

The current politcal system would also have to be changed, in order for everyone to survive under a vegetarian diet.

Vegetarian

The world is never going to become vegetarian. There's always going to be people raising their own animals, or hunting them. I'll just be happy if the factory farms go away. I would like to think the world would go vegetarian, but that doesn't sound like it would happen.

The amount of water used for 1 pound of lettuce - 23 gallons
The amount of water used for 1 pound of beef - 5,219 gallons

If the world stopped eating meat and fed the hungry the crops we feed cattle we would cure world hunger.

The Food Revolution

Actually it would prob raise the sustainability level a bit. We are currently over it.

Of course we would survive and yes it would be healthier and everyone would live longer.

Yes we would survive, and perhaps live longer, but having s bit of meat isn't bad.

Yes. The animals would be happier.

The whole world cannot become vegetarian. The only way most vegetarians can do it is because of money and fully stocked Grocery Stores to spend that money. Many people can't afford to buy food and even if they did there would be nowhere to buy the food. Many people have to eat whatever they can get a hold of just to survive. These people cannot become vegetarians. And there are also people that can but do not want to (including me)

Healthier? There are Billions of people that eat an omnivore diet and are in perfect health. Eating fresh lean meat is not bad for you, eating junk food and lack of exercise are.

Much of the land used to raise cattle is not suitable for growing fruits and vegetables. World hunger is not because of a lack of food. The problem is getting the food to people. People live where land is infertile, people don't have money, corrupt governments block any aid people try to give to them.

Its doesn't matter anyway, it will never happen, and that's a good thing!

While many people have strong opinions about this, their is no proof that we would be any healthier or unhealthier then we are now. Lots of people believe that converting everyone to be vegetarians will end all world hunger, I personally don't think this is true. If everyone did become vegetarian we would not suddenly let loose all the cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys etc to go be free. Breeding would gradually decrease until there would be no more livestock. most of the land would be used to grow crops. However their are problems with everyone becoming vegetarian. using livestock on pasture the right way is one of the best ways to fertilize the soil and improve the land for crop production. With no one eating meats few people would raise sheep and other grazing animals and therefor it would be harder to keep the land in good condition and well fertilized. I understand people having a problem with large scale agriculture, but are you really going to complain about, for example a cattle herdsman in the african savanna not being a vegetarian? In many parts of the world people are able to provide themselves with other sources of protein but in other places meat is the only real source of protein. Also all the land that is used for grazing can not all be used for growing crops. Livestock (especially goats) can graze in very rugged poor quality conditions where you could never grow a large amount of crops.

This is like the question of world peace, there is no such thing. If the world had world peace, then I assume everybody would be vegetarian because killing animals isn't exactly "peaceful". But then, of course, animals wouldn't eat eachother, and might starve.
