Are there any reasons to eat meat?!

Question: Are there any reasons to eat meat?
I don't see any. I am a vegetarian. Why do people eat meat?(besides the taste)

Answers:

**before anyone reads this and disagrees, I am speaking purely scientific fact and I have a BHSc in Nutrition!**

Wow, some extremely uneducated comments being made here.

People eat meat for a variety of reasons... taste, because they were raised to, because of cultural influences etc etc.

Human beings do not HAVE TO eat meat and we will not become sick, weak, skinny, anemic or anything else that people are claiming. The only reason any of that would happen is if a person was eating an improper diet, was starving or had some kind of digestive or absorption issue. This will happen with a poor diet whether somebody eats meat or does not eat meat.

We need the essential amino acids and meat is NOT the only source of essential amino acids as someone was quoting above. That's ridiculous.

Also vegetarians do not live off "salads" and plain vegetables. Otherwise where we get our protein, our fats and enough carbohydrates? Well according to that comment, we don't get any of those things and we're all withering away to nothing. People are just so ignorant... do you have any idea how many vegetarians there are all over the world and how many entire societies are vegetarian? Sheesh

Here are a few reasons that I still eat meat.

1) It tastes good
2) It's filling
3) It's fairly cheap
4) Many culinary uses / applications
5) Complete protein profile - convenient not having to worry
6) Many different flavors / textures / aromas (not to mention from cooking methods)
7) Byproducts of the meat production are used almost everywhere!
8) Animals raised for meat recycle agricultural waste products
9) Keeping people employed
10) Great source of Iron! The iron in myoglobin is very easily absorbed by the body compared to non-animal sources.

Quite a few people who eat meat also have strong stances on animal welfare. (myself included) Many studies have shown that well treated animals are not only healthier, but usually provide higher quality products. (meat, milk, eggs, ect) It's a win/win.

Edit:
"But if you did your research, you'd realise that our digestive systems are not suitable for meat-eating."

If this is the case, why does that website not have 1 scientific, peer reviewed article listed as a source? That appears to be a very poorly made, likely bias, and unreliable website that anyone doing reputable research would immediately dismiss.

Remember, "Correlation does not imply causation"!

We eat foods for many reasons. There are cultural, nutritional and taste reasons for meat-eating. For example, a typical American would never eat balut, which is a hard boiled duck egg with a baby duck inside. This type of food would be considered taboo in the US, but other countries (like the Philippines) consider balut to be a delicacy. The same is true with dog and cat meat.

A lot of people eat meat because they grew up eating meat. Meat-eating is ingrained in their culture. They will also argue that it contains essential nutrients like protein or B12. Of course, there are other sources for protein and B12. These people don't buy into the idea of supporting animal rights, either.

The media in the US stresses the importance of meat in a healthy diet. This means big money for the meat industry, which has a very strong lobby in Washington. The American government is the entity that invented the food pyramid, which says that we need meat in our diet.

But, the choice is up to the individual. Vegetarianism is becoming more main-stream. A lot of people are recognizing how healthy a vegetarian diet is. Any nutritionist who graduated from college in the last 20 years will tell you the healthiest diet anyone can eat is a low-fat, whole-foods vegetarian diet.

Because they are selfish and don't think about health, enviorment or animal welfare or simply don't care. Most (not all) are completly ignorant about factory farming and the dammage it does to enviorment, animals and their health. There are no good reasons to stuff your face with the flesh of a dead creature. Vegetarians and vegans are less likly to get cancer, diobeties, achne, food poisoning, heart disease, or be obeese, we save 100 animals a year and aren't as distructive to the enviorment. Any way I truly don't know the answer to your queshtion.

Merry Christmas

Of course you think that. Not to be rude or mean, but you shouldn't judge people for their eating habits/diets. I don't see anything wrong with vegetarianism, but I hate when vegetarians think eating meat is a crime or disgusting. I like meat, because that's what I'm used too and personally don't see anything with eating meat. It's apart of the cycle of life. I don't kill animals myself or support when others kill animals, It's sad but it's life. Besides, animals eat other animals in nature to survive, so why shouldn't we?

Meat is delicious and more satisfying than just vegetables. Humans are meant to eat meat. Not eating meat does not help animals at all. There are hundreds of other species that eat meat and you are not going to stop them. Most of the meat humans eat is bred and raised by humans so if we didn't eat meat, you would be denying all these animals to have a chance to live at all. They would never be born at all. Also a lot of species populations would get so numerous that they would die in great numbers from sickness and starvation. Look how the human population is exploding. We probably could use a species to hunt and eat us.

I really don't need a reason to do something that is socially acceptable, perfectly natural, and completely legal. Its also nobody business what I or anyone else eats. But if I has to say why I eat it, its because its food and my body is designed to eat it. Humans are Omnivores, this is a fact and not up for debate.

Oh and yes, it does taste good.

H2k9, that website is vegan propaganda

cause when you're 6'4" and 200lbs at 13 and pretty muscley, a salad ain't gonna fill me up. Also,, it is in our genetics. notice your canines (teeth) also your forward facing eyes (the face of a predator) and notice your instincts (you were made to be an apex predator). And from natural meat like elk, goose turkey rabbit duck and the others have important proteins that help muscle, brain and bone development that you can't get as easy with veggies. I eat meat cause then it gives me an excuse to go hunting (no i am not a cold blooded killer.)

Besides, i am a member of PETA (people eating tasty animals) and MPOP (men for the protection of plants) how dare you kill our green friends

truth hurts. just try and prove me wrong.

'Deer Hunter' (above) - you may think that humans are omnivores. But if you did your research, you'd realise that our digestive systems are not suitable for meat-eating. That is why meat is directly related to colon cancer, because it just sits there, sometimes for months and years just rotting away. I think you should read this website. http://www.celestialhealing.net/physical…

Good source of protein and other essentials like iront. It is not UNhealthy to eat meat, however a proper balanced diet without meet is better for you. Beans and other legumes are great sources of fat and muscle free protein.

People who eat meat choose to eat meat. There is no other reason, nor should there be. And arguments like, "eating meat is healthier than a vegetarian diet" are simply false.

Vegetarian since birth

Vitamin B12, protein, heme iron...... Plus it's our natural diet. Without animal products, you're left needing to take supplements or eating highly processed, fortified foods.

Nutrition, tastes good, found everywhere, can be cooked many different ways.

So...

I'm not seeing any "reason" that couldn't also be applied to murder and cannibalism.

Yes, because meat tastes ******* delicious.

Well if we're not counting taste why doesn't everyone just get their food through an IV drip??

I'm a doctor.

Protien! && it tastes great!

no

Our body produces amino acids; however out of all the amino acids we need to be healthy there are some that or bodies cannot produce. Meat is the only way to get these essential amino acids and without them you will eventually become weak, sick, and unhealthy

Grade 10 health class

For health reasons. And it does tast AWSOME. and i have allways wanted to be a vegetarian because i hate that they kill the animals but my thought is that its allready dead and why waste it? Not eating it wouldnt bring it back.

Very nutritious and it is nature.

I am sure if cows and all had it their way they'd be the ones eating you.

Just look at cats for instances. If we were all the size of mice cats would defo attack us and try to eat us.

I enjoy knowing that something had to die to feed me.
