The guesstimates are between 35-50% of people in India are vegetarians (350-500 million). However, there is a contention as to what is "vegetarian" as interpreted by Indians which may not be the same as Westerners would define it. Also many Indians belong to a religion/s which are supposed to encourage vegetarianism but may not be necessarily following church doctrine on food. India, as a country is also one of the biggest consumer of chicken, fish/seafood and lamb.

Case in point: there is a chef from India in New York named Suvir Saran who claims he is and is classified as "vegetarian". While he will not eat any meat served in his restaurant directly, he will eat the veggies cooked or served with meat, a no-no with Western vegetarians.

31% of Indians are vegetarians, while another 9% consumes eggs.

India has about 1,155,347,678 people - 2009 estimate

That would put it around 358(pure vegs) - 462(eggiterians) million people.
