If given a half hour to talk about food, what would you say?!

Question: If given a half hour to talk about food, what would you say?
I've been given a half hour in front of some open minded folks. As a pure vegetarian (vegan), I have too much to say about food. For example do I talk about food categories that are bad:

- Dairy - correlation with heart disease, breast cancer, and prostate cancer
- Meat - rBGH, antibiotics, cholesterol
- Fish - DDT, heavy metals, cholesterol
- Additives - Excitotoxins: MSG, Aspartame

Do I talk about healthy eating:
- Leafy greens, colored vegetables
- Whole grains
- Legumes
- Fruit
- Omega-3, B12, D3

Do I talk about the politics of food:
- FDA, USDA
- Monsanto
- Fast food industry
- Political and Mass media participation

Do I talk about animal mistreatment?

I don't want to alienate these folks. What would you say?

Answers:

Ok, I'll start off by saying that I look at food from an animal welfare point of view i.e. I eat meat but only from animals that have had a decent lifestyle and humane death. However I am completely open minded to other peoples views and enjoying hearing there opinions.

If I was listening to a half hour talk from you I would rather hear about why you consider veganism the correct way of eating. So possibly more about the health benefits with a bit about how meat etc can be bad. I would stay away from the politics as thats a very dodgy area that can get people really upset. Personally I get annoyed if someone talks too much about the bad stuff as I know there are extreme problems with the way animals are kept for food and additives etc. I like people to present a simple argument with a few clear points that we could then go onto discuss. Try to present all your information in an unbiased way with any scientific evidence to back them up and avoid letting your personal feelings come across too strong. Dont stress any one point too much as this can be extremely annoying for anyone who disagrees with you. Hopefully then people will listen to you seriously and be more willing to enter a discussion about your points.

Hope this helps :)

I would say it depends on the age of your listeners. For instance, most teens don't give a crap about their health, or cancer, but they are interested in animal rights. College age people would be more interested in the political aspect; and people over 50 would be concerned with the health and disease prevention angle.

If I were you, I would not talk about how bad the bad foods are, but concentrate on how good the good ones are. You could very well run the risk of alienating some of them if they feel you are putting down their choices. (no matter how true it all is they won't want to hear it)
Make it positive, upbeat, talk a little about how Jack LaLanne was a forerunner in the movement, how helathy and lively he still is at his age. Talk about the benefits, explain how important natural nutrients really are in this polluted world.

just my 2c

avoid telling them what they are doing thats wrong. itll come off as "you suck and i know more than you". Instead, stay positive and tell them some good things they can do.

I would stay away from getting in depth about any one of those things. and graze them all except the politics. telling them about corrupt industries will turn them off. thats something i feel like people have to delve into themselves and really want to learn about. not be told in a half hour.
