Should I become full vegetarian? 13 years old?!

Question: Should I become full vegetarian? 13 years old?
I am 13 years old and I haven't been eating chicken or red meat for 6 weeks. I want to become a full vegetarian by eliminating fish and seafood as well, but my parents are still trying to push me to eat red meat and chicken every single meal time. I can't count how many times there have been lectures and arguments about me being 5'4 (163cm) for the rest of my life, also being frail and disgusting. My mother is sure of herself that she will get me to eat meat; in fact, she is being extremely smug. If I do become a full vegetarian and follow this diet for the rest of my life, how am I going to make my parents see that this decision won't change?

Just educate yourself about vegetarianism. As long as you know what you're doing then you'll be fine. I went vegetarian when I was 12 and honestly it's pretty easy. You just have to be willing to try new foods and explore your options.
Being vegetarian doesn't stunt your growth. I haven't growth since I was about 13, but that was just me. I have a friend whose been a vegetarian since she was 9 and she's about 5'6''.
As long as you receive the nutrients you need you will look fine. Actually you'll probably look healthier. After I went vegetarian I noticed that my hair looked shinier, my nails looked stronger, and I lost a couple pounds.
If your parents are still worried, try following the vegetarian food pyramid for a while: http://www.vegetariannutrition.org/food-…
Hope that helps :)

You should wait until you are in college before you become a complete vegetarian, for the reason that your body requires much more nutrition than you are likely to get if your mom is not going to cooperate and make you vegetarian meals. A young girl needs much iron and B-12 which is very difficult to obtain from a diet that lacks red meat.

I think you are using this as something to fight with your parents about, and they with you. You do not need to eat meat with every meal, but you should eat a balanced diet with many different types of food, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as dairy products and whole grains.

Lots of young teen girls want to become vegetarians because they are a little picky about food and they think it is fashionable to not eat meat. I think you should wait until you can cook your own meals and your body has become fully mature, then decide.

I'd keep some meat in your diet. I know it sounds unfair, but I was vegetarian for a while when I was about your age. I ended up going back to eating meat, because it took a lot of stress on my body. You should keep at least chicken or fish in, but maybe cut back on the other meats? You still need some protein. I'd say either wait a few years until your body has definitely finished growing (Hey, I stopped growing height wise when I was twelve, so you might not have to wait forever) or make sure you keep up your protein in other ways, like beans and nuts, etc. Just take care of your body, eat healthy foods (there's some icky vegetarian stuff out there), exercise and remember your vitamins, and you should be fine. Good luck!

My sister went through that also. How she got out of that was sausage pizza when my mother ordered. The only thing you can do is stand your ground and talk to your parents about this one-on-one and if they don't understand then you have a whole life ahead of you to start over. There is another way to be on a diet and that's go vegan when it comes to sweats. Have a nice christmas.

You need to become very educated about vegetarianism, especially at your age.
I would recommend even taking to your doctor about it because you are going to lose a lot of nutrients you'd be getting from meat.

I think your parents would approve more if you take the appropriate, and responsible measures to make sure you stay healthy :)

good luck!

I'm also 13 and when I was 11 I went veg. My parents tryed to talk me out of it about protein and stupid stuff but I wouldn't let them controle my life. I'm around 5'3ish and doing great. Explain why you chose to go veg. Show them doccumentarys like meat your meat, food Inc and Earthligs. When every one els is eating meat you can have eggs, beans, hummus, cheese, crackers, veggie… or veggies. Theese are easy and quick to make and have protein.

Vegetarian

Well if you do become a full vegetarian make sure it's for the right reasons. If you really want to be a vegetarian then go ahead. I have been avoiding red meats for years, and I'm 14 and perfectly fine. Just tell them it's what you want and explain your reasons why and if they trust you they should understand.
Good luck and merry christmas!

I just read the title but I'm 12 almost 13 and started in April this year.. I'm fine.. I just don't eat meat. Everything but meat goes into my tummy.. you just need to eat tons of veggis and drink tons of water.. But besides that yeah I'm full on and fine.. After a while meat doesn't seem that good, the first week you'll miss it but it's soo worth it in the end

Yes! Vegetarianism is the healthiest diet! Just eat a balanced diet and drink tons of milk! You will grow trust me!
As for your parents show them the video on meat.org if they still say no idk what to say

Im 13 and have been a Vegan since June 28. My parents still arent as supportive as i would of liked them to be but they still get me what i need. They also thought i was joking when i said i wasent going to eat meat anymore. Most parent think that the human body needs meat when it doesent. You mostly get B-12 from meats which you can take a Vitamin for that is from Plant source. Also Iron which you get in Lentils. You should show your parents the Cons of eating meat like the High Cholestrol which causes the three main way people die. Also a greater chance of Obesity. You can also rent the movies Food Inc or Earthlings. I would mostly reccomend the movie Earthlings as it shows what happens in a Slaughter House. Im also 5'4 and ive been that way since ive been in 5th grade. If they keep trying to push you into meat just show them that you wont eat it. I really wouldent reccomend starving yourself for doing this just avoid the meat

There are children who are raised complete vegan for their entire upbringing and they are just as healthy as anyone else. What's important are getting your nutrients but you can certainly do this with a plant-based diet. Get the book "becoming Vegan" by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina. And take their advice seriously and get what they are suggesting - at the grocery and the vitamin store. Your parents need to stop being so ignorant and start supporting you. If you have any problems, have them message me with questions. I have been a vegetarian for 11 years and a vegan for a year and a half. I don't like ignorant parents.

Myself - a vegan for 1.5 years, and a vegetarian for 11 years.

First, let me say that I am not a vegetarian. As for your question, there is thought to be a link between red meat and height, but it is not the only factor. Sleep is probably more important. I would recommend against becoming a full time vegetarian at your age. Without your parent's help, it will be very difficult to get all of the nutrients (particularly proteins) your body needs, particularly at this stage in your life. Your body will be doing a lot of growing and changing in the next few years. It's not that you can't get all of the protein and other nutrients that your body needs with a vegetarian diet, it's just that it will be much harder without help and support from your family. It is something you need to discuss calmly with your parents and probably your doctor as well. Your doctor may be able to give you reasons why you should wait or give your parents the info they need to assure them that a vegetarian lifestyle is okay.

no matter how tall you are, your parents are right, you should eat red meat for PROTEIN, your body needs that especially at ur age, remember that you are still on developing period. you can be a full vegetarian when your developing period is over, ithink over 21.. for better knowledge ask your physician.. good luck.. :))
