living vegan in france?!

Question: Living vegan in france?
i'm in a peculiar situation, and i'd like some advice.

if there's one thing that my friends know about me (hah), it's that i'm borderline obsessed with france, french language, and the french culture.. i always have been, always will be. i love their love for food, family, and life. (particularly, the food.)

but for the past six months, i've been going back and forth between whether or not i want to become a vegan. right now, i'd consider myself a vegetarian who is either about to:

a) OPEN the doors to the world of rich foods, fine wine, and foie gras.
b) CLOSE the doors, help reduce animal suffering, and reap the health benefits of veganism.

i've read skinny bastard, which completely changes my outlook on the meat/dairy industry, WHICH now makes me want to go vegan).

i know their are a lot of opinions out there on francophilia, skinny bastard, and veganism, but what i'm asking is this...

"do you think it's possible to live a vegan lifestyle in france, the european cradle of haute cuisine?"

Answers:

Having spent a fair amount of time in various parts of France I think that living a vegan lifestyle will be quite a challenge, particularly when going out to restaurants. If you can eat dairy that will give you more choices. Of course if you spend your time in the major cities such as Paris or Lyon being vegan should be less difficult. Of course you can cook for yourself, but part of the fun of traveling is experiencing the food they have to offer.

The French LOVE their cheese. I think it will be very challenging for you to avoid dairy in traditional French cuisine. However, it is certainly possible to be vegan during your stay in France. This is really a matter where you have to take some time and think about what you really want, what you really believe in, and your reasons for wanting to become vegan in the first place.

If you want to experience French culture to the fullest, you have to eat their food. Consider delaying that decision until you return to the US.
