Cheese without Rennet?!

Question: Cheese without Rennet?
Hi. I am a vegetarian, trying to make Mexican food. Now, I want to buy cheddar cheese and monetary jack cheese. I looked in my super market but all of them contained rennet. I don’t eat meat so cheese containing rennet is no good. I want to know where I can get cheddar & monetary jack without rennet. I live in Toronto, ON.

Ask your store to bring a brand in that does not have rennet. Armstrong cheese which is produced in BC does not contain rennet. I get it at a local "Sobey's-owned" store here in BC ("Thrifty Foods") but Sobeys should be able to get it in.

Rennet is not automatically non-vegetarian. There are certain types of rennet that are fine for lacto-vegetarians, they are micro and vegetable rennet. Now, if I were to buy cheese from a normal grocery story I would look for either Tillamook or Cabot. Both use vegetarian rennet. Or I would go to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods since they label most of their cheese.

I don;t know anything about Toronto, but I suggest finding a co-op or a Whole Foods type place. Those stores cater to vegetarians. There are cheeses out there that are labeled Vegan Cheese.
Also, there is such a thing as vegetarian rennet...so just because the ingredients list rennet it doesn't mean that it isn't vegetarian.

I'm not sure WHERE you can get it but Most cabot cheeses have no animal rennet. It says so on the back of the label. MANY Boars Head deli cheeses are also suitable. Just call the company and ask them to email you a list.

Horizon Organic cheeses are vegetarian.
Some varieties of Boar's head cheeses are also vegetarian(American cheese, Baby swiss, Canadian Cheddar).
