Most commercial perfumes are not vegan.

In response to the person who couldn't imagine how perfume could not be vegan, fragrance products may contain many many ingredients from the bodies or secretions of animals. Non-vegan perfume and makeup ingredients include retinol, ambergris, caprylic acid, castoreum, musk, squalane, and plenty more. Castoreum (not castor bean oil, which is a vegan ingredient) comes from a gland located between the genitals and anus of the beaver. I am not joking.

Castoreum is also used as a food additive. Yuck!

If you already have non-vegan products, the most environmentally friendly things to do would be to either use them up or give them to your sister, rather than throwing them away, before replacing them. Then, when you run out, explore some new products!

Good luck finding a cruelty-free fragrance you love!

How can perfume not be vegan? Did you use to use a perfume made of chicken broth or beef stock or something? Do you think they collect blood from road kill and sprey it at you? I don't get it?
