Restaurant gave me chicken when I asked for tofu, do I have to restart my "how long I've been a vegetarian&quo!

Question: Restaurant gave me chicken when I asked for tofu, do I have to restart my "how long I've been a vegetarian"?
I'm a vegetarian and this restaurant that I went to gave me chicken on my sandwich instead of tofu and I unknowingly bit into it and ate a couple of pieces and then I immediately realized that it wasn't tofu but chicken! Do I have to start my "count" on how long I've been a vegetarian over?

Answers:

No, because you didn't order the chicken. The people at the restaurant were the ones who messed up your order.

Whenever you're ordering food from a non-vegetarian restaurant, make sure you tell them what you want twice and then check the order to make sure it's what you asked for. Cut into the food with a fork and knife before actually biting into it.

A lot of people don't know what a vegetarian is so they will assume you can eat chicken or fish and screw up your order.

It's happened to me a couple of times in the past myself.

To Deer Hunter: I find it funny how a non-vegetarian spends hours of his time on a vegetarian section of Yahoo! answers.

Why re-start your count at all? I consider myself a vegetarian and yet I probably eat meat a few times each year--there is no score-keeper! Honestly, it isn't like alcoholism--a slip doesn't end things. I view myself as being a vegetarian for over 20-years, and yet, I probably have meat a fewx each year. There is no perfect definition--you-do-you.

Especially in this case--you were tricked/fooled--that does not count. You are still a vegetarian. Clearly you are reacting strongly. This place was in the wrong. You are fine, your count does not change--they may need better quality measures.

No, you don't have to restart your "count". You were and still are a vegetarian, even when you bit in to that "tofu" sandwich. Just because a mistake was made (and you quickly righted the situation) would not make you NOT a vegetarian.

Yes, you have to write a written apology to the vegetarian committee to see if they will let you back in the club.

To dentakleen, i don't give a rats a$$ what you think.

You are now classified as Vegetarian with an Explanation.

No, unless you willingly and knowingly consumed animal meat then you are not at fault. It was their mistake, not yours.

No, because they are the ones who made the error.

I wouldn't think so- not if it wasn't deliberate.

Eh, it's not like you wanted to. What matters is that you're sticking to your choices! :D

I am assuming you stopped and complained? If you did that you are fine, mistakes happen, they are not a good thing but they do happen.
A good friend of mine ate a egg sandwich that had bacon because the dumb waitress couldn't seem to understand, when we said "everyone at the table is vegan" we weren't just joking. The place had a vegan menu and even veganized a dish that wasn't vegan and they are well known for having vegan food. Unfortunately we all tried the bacon but it didn't look real and we didn't say too them you shouldn't eat it. (we found out later via the bill and that persyn asked questions after we had left) However we aren't starting our vegan counters over with because we now understand that it was real and we made a mistake and we felt a bit ill afterwards but made it through.

The problem is this world is full of idiots who think it is ok to use and abuse animals and exploit them for whatever they want. So sometimes you will accidentally do something or eat something you didn't know involved animal exploitation (aside from vegetarians who eat eggs or maybe milk or maybe both or use other animal products or wear leather or wool or use animal testing or support animal circuses or whatever other use and abuse we have for animals as long as it doesn't involve at the very least not eating meat or slaughter by-products) as long as you don't do it on purpose and make sure to explain things to, in this case, your host or waitstaff or cashier that they made a mistake and you would like your money back or something like that, then you are ok (so long as you don't repeat the mistake)
It is not a proud moment but it happened and you have to be honest about it especially to those involved who are still alive.

Now if you acted like things were ok or you knowingly did this or ate a large portion of the sandwich then I would probably rethink things and start over. I am assuming along the lines of my first question that is was an accident but the "ate a couple of pieces" statement is questionable for me.

vegan because animals are not property

You're a failure - get over it
The only people who care about how long you've been a veggie are those that also do it so they can say they are - Its the same as being gay or bi - it's all the trend these days.

Absolutely. What would be the point of being a vegetarian if you didn't?

yes

you don't claim you didn't eat it
