Hi Vegetarians,pls answer this...?!

Question: Hi Vegetarians,pls answer this...?
I have found many questions and answers in this forum accusing non-vegetarians of committing sins by eating dead animals and making their bodies impure and graveyards by consuming meat, etc etc...

My question is Don't Plants have life? Its been scientifically proven tht plants do have life. They experience growth as well as pain, just as animals do.The only difference is tht they don't bleed or cry out loud while dying. They just die a silent death. But tht doesn't mean they don't experience pain while they are being uprooted(for acquiring veg like potatoes,carrots..)while fruits and vegetables are hacked off them, etc. They are not lifeless.

So,aren't you too doing the same thing as non-vegetarians by consuming plants and vegetables? You are eating dead bodies too.Your body too is bcuming a vegetarian graveyard. So,no vegetarian in my opinion, has a right to accuse a non-vegetarian for his/her eating habits.
What arguements wud you like to put forward for this query of mine??

Answers:

Plants can't feel pain, they don't have brains or nervous systems.

No one really believes that plants have feelings. Want to test this theory? Hand someone a knife and a carrot and ask them to slice it. Then try handing them a knife and a puppy….

Plants have no central nervous system. They exhibit no pain response.

However, meat eaters consume far more plant material than vegetarians- since it takes an average of 15 pounds of plant matter to produce one pound of meat. So, if one is concerned with the feelings of plants, the only ethical choice is vegetarianism.

Okay, so if I can't eat meat, and I can't eat anything that grows either, what shall I eat? Silicone?

I don't eat meat, because yes, the animals feel pain and I don't want to be a part of that.
Veggies & grains though? They do not have central nervous systems or brains, therefore cannot feel pain. Even though a plant is living, it doesn't have sensory system.

If it is a science study then i would have to save that our bodies are able to absorb, breakdown and get the enzymes, oxygens and nutrients from plants to sustain our lives for extensive time while animals do cause gases at this time I dont belive i have heard that plants are hurting the environment any time recently.

I never force my views on others but i will answer any questions that people want to ask. Plants dont feel pain because they dont have a nervous system and most plants grow back again. Fruit trees drop their fruit, root vegetables replenish themselves, if we did not eat them they would rot away and be wasted, so eating plant food is ethical

ive never accused anyone of that, i dont beleiv ein 'sin' first of all, and second what others eat is none of my buisness
;-)

plants dont have sentience, so in our terms are not alive, they ar enot known to 'feel' due to having no nervous system that we are aware of
that and im made of what im made of, i have to survive on something, i didnt choose to be made of meat, but im here now, and have to at least try to stay alive

LOL @ the idea of "sin"

Their point is that you are consuming the carcasses of dead tortured sentient creatures.
I highly doubt you'd consider stabbing a dog vs. stabbing a potato to be any real ethical dilemma.

To start, vegetarians shouldnt yell at other people for eating meat, its not fair.

Plants dont have a brain, or lungs, and are very different from animals

I'm not vegetarian and I get what you mean. They're like stop eating meat all the time! plants even have genders! look it up, it's true.

no, a plant is not a dead body, but a dead pig is a dead body

You're right, we should just stop eating everything, and die.

Plants don't have a brain and central nervous system, therefore they lack the ability to feel or think.

If you cut a seed from a tree, or tuber from the ground, the plant doesn't die.
Meat= death for that being.

Fruits are ovaries- the tre has many more eggs and seeds to reproduce.
Vegetables are roots and stems- the plant still lives.

A brain with nerves linked by neurons to it, is the way animals feel.

Hair is the product of a biological process- but it has no brain or nerves of its own, it does not feel.
It's got the colour, shine and nutrition of the form creating it, it shows all the goodness if what has gone into making it, but it is not a living thing itself. Something else made it.

Fruit and veg is the same.

The seeds of all plants is an organism without a brain- it has a nucleus with DNA, like biology.
Living things like animals are uniqu, they have a brain, whic is like billions of these DNA cells growing together. We, and animals are like little worlds walking upon earth.

Please cite your sources and scientific research done to prove that plants feel pain.
Plants do not have a nervous system. They do not have brains. They do not have blood.

Animals are walking, breathing creatures that feel pain and fear. To knowingly put my money towards an industry that packs animals into tiny spaces, slits their throats while they are hung up by their feet, and show total disrespect and disregard for life does not mesh with my morals or my conscience.

Everything survives at the expense of everything else, the vegetables I eat were acquired from a field that killed animals in the machines that were harvesting them. Being a vegetarian or a vegan is not about being perfect. It is about abstaining from cruelty and exploitation where ever possible, and choosing the best alternative. I would rather my body be a graveyard for vegetables, than a graveyard for a being that walked, lived, and died in an institution of unbelievable cruelty that will rot within my intestinal tract.

Until you visit a factory farm or until you realize where your juicy hamburger comes from, you have no right to accuse me of my eating habits.

"I have found many questions and answers in this forum accusing non-vegetarians of committing sins by eating dead animals and making their bodies impure and graveyards by consuming meat, etc etc... "

-Really? Can you pull up the questions to use as example? Sin is a religious thing and vegetarianism is not, plus I dont think you will come across many vegetarians who will accuse you of being "unpure" - also a religious matter. This is just not something many vegetarians think or say at all.

Your right, no vegetarian has a right to accuse you in your eating habits, but not because of any of the silly reasons you have come up with.

I'm vegan, and agree.
We have no idea if plants are sentient beings or not.
They are so completely different than us, that we can't even conceive of which kind of level of consciousness they might be on compared to our own level.
But, for me, I cut out animal products because after studying human digestion, I determined that we are just not 'designed' to consume such things. That is the simple reason it causes illness and disease. Not because it is 'bad' for us, but that we should not be eating it in the first place. We probably stared eating animals and their byproducts long ago during hard times, and from there it became integrated into our culture, then part of our regular diet, then in recent times, with everyone wanting to live like kings, we pigged out on such things, convenience foods, and the like. It's pretty obvious to me that eating cooked food is also a products of the same sort of hard times; trying to access foods that uncooked were difficult to eat and digest.

But, in the end, I feel that I am naturally 'designed' to eat vegetation, especially fruit. If I wanted to, I could consume fruit and vegetables without killing any plant... taking the fruit, berried, leaves, without pulling out the whole plant. It's possible. Plants want us to eat their fruit, berries, seeds, nuts... we help spread their genetics around.

We could have a symbiotic relationship with our plants. We could make a silent deal with our plants. We could say, "Hey, I'll love you, take care of you, eliminate your competition, keep the pests off, and you can live a great healthy vibrant life, and in return you can share some of your leaves, fruit, seeds... and such. Let's shake on it! It's a deal, thanks!"

I'm a vegetarian and even I think that anyone who says that must be like on crack or something.
yes its very similar but instead of eating something thats been moving around and mooing or something its just been sitting there. anyone who says what you have written is obviously in denial.
the reason I am a vegetarian is cuz I just don't like the idea of eating flesh and the few times i have tied it i got a little freaked out but i have nothing agenst it and i hope one day i will get over it and be able to eat a chicken.

Jeremy Bentham said "The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?" when introducing the subject of animal rights to the world back in the early 19th century. If we apply this same principle to plants then we know that they do not suffer, for they lack the fundamental elements which allow animals to suffer. They may respond to damage but that is not pain, that is responding to damage. As it has been pointed out, no scientific study anywhere has ever shown that plants experience pain. See this question from yesterday where I explained why it is unreasonable to think otherwise: http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/ind…

Also you are using this already flawed principle to say that it is ok to kill animals for food when we KNOW that they suffer. If one is to be as open minded as possible we could say perhaps plants suffer, but there is a vast amount of doubt involved and it is an unscientific conclusion based on the available evidence. But we know without any doubt that all vertebrates and many more invertebrates are capable of experiencing pain. So the point stands, a meat eater's body is made up from proteins and vitamins obtained from animals, many of which must have suffered at least some time in their lives before being slaughtered for food.

However I agree that accusatory statements are unhelpful. But sometimes it is hard not to let emotions take over during a discussion.

Actually you are correct. I just read an article by Carol Yoon in today's New York Times saying that plants do everything that they can to avoid death "Meanwhile, whether you pluck a leaf or slice a trunk, a plant neither grimaces nor cries out. Plants don’t seem to mind being killed, at least as far as we can see"..."the body of a corn plant torn from the soil or sliced into pieces struggles to save itself, just as vigorously and just as uselessly, if much less obviously to the human ear and eye". "When a plant is wounded, its body immediately kicks into protection mode. It releases a bouquet of volatile chemicals, which in some cases have been shown to induce neighboring plants to pre-emptively step up their own chemical defenses and in other cases to lure in predators of the beasts that may be causing the damage to the plants"
