Does being a vegetarian make you extremely tired?!

Question: Does being a vegetarian make you extremely tired?
I have forgotten what it's like to not be tired, and i was curious as to whether it had any correlation to being a vegetarian

I take lots of vitamins already and ION tablets

Answer = Nope, as long as you are eating a healthy balanced diet as a veggie you should not be any more tired than a meat eater, you need to make sure you are getting enough grains, fresh fruit, raw nuts and fresh veggies in your diet. If you are doing this then maybe you need to look at the amount of calories you are consuming, it's possible it's not enough, hence why you are feeling so tired. If that does not sound like you either, then I would recommend a visit to the doctors for their advice, good luck

Depends on how good your vegetarian diet is, to be honest. Do you eat processed food and side dishes, or do you eat colorful fruits and veggies, whole grains, and something regularly for protein? Taking iron tablets isn't as good as getting natural iron from food. Google the vegetarian food pyramid and make sure you're keeping up with everything you should be. If you aren't, that's likely the reason you're tired - not that you don't eat meat.

Could be a ton of factors for whats causing this, more than likely its from not being informed of a proper vegetarian diet which often happens with beginners myself included.
A vegetarian isn't any more tired than the average person providing they are doing their diet right (which isn't as hard as i'm making it sound), the lifestyle, stress, workload, activity level etc etc can also affect a persons well being

It could have something to do with being vegetarian. Some people's bodies just don't absorb and use supplements as well as those same nutrients from whole foods. And being vegetarian can require a lot of supplements.

Being tired can be a low iron symptom. It's fairly easy to get your iron tested, though. Lack of protein can also cause your tiredness. That's a bit harder to test for, though. Here's a link to a young woman who finally gave up and started eating animal products again. She was sick and tired of being sick and tired. It's kinda long, but you might recognize yourself if you take some time to read it. Good luck...

Being vegan gives me more energy than usual. Try altering your diet to include more fresh fruits and vegetables... and make sure you eat your leafy greens! Iron tablets can be dangerous.. I'd recommend adding spirulina instead. If you at a tsp to a fruit smoothie, you can't taste it, and it does wonders for your iron levels (especially when consumed with vitamin C). Try making sure you're getting your full night's rest and staying organized in order to reduce stress. Hope everything works out...

I was with my cousin on a camping trip and my food got totally soiled. So it was either get his food or freakin starve. So I ate a tuna fish sandwich - I was bouncing off the walls. I didn't sleep that night either. It was like someone switched on a nitrous tank.

I am back being vegetarian but geeshe that was weird. I think whole grains & veggies takes a lot for the body to digest. I wouldn't say I am "tired" now like you say, but more stable & calm being vegetarian.

I am not opposed to switching diets if it means better health for me. I mean you can always switch back. Anyway hope you find a better balance! :)

Come to think of it, maybe those dorks spiked my beer with something...

Wow....you need iron maybe.
Spinach, walnuts, brazil nuts, peanut butter.
I'd really eat well- it sounds like you're not and just exhausted.

You HAVE to eat good oils and iron/protein.
A simple adjustment like wholehweat pita with spinach, hummous and peanut butter, can take care of it, eat something like that daily, as well as the normal diet.
You can also eat pumpkin baked with cheese and walnuts- some nut oils, protein and iron in one go, please eat right! Colour your meals, with yellow, dark green, brown, orange, as mush as you can.

Pills won't take the place of fresh nutrients.

More protein.....like asparagus, broccoli, peanuts (peanut butter), cauliflower, peas (black eyed)
More carbs......whole breads, fruits, potatoes.....
More iron.........soybeans, spinach

Yes it does FOR SURE...
I was a veghead for like 2-4 years (lol im bad with numbers :P)
I stopped last summer on vacation because every day I felt drowsy so I got chicken strips and I felt so much better the pills help but they dont work as good :P

I have much more energy, i run fifty miles a week and do aqua aerobics twice a week and have completed several marathons. .I am in good health and rarely get ill thanks to eating a vegan diet.

do you eat lots of carbohydrates at all? just that can make you tired. just have plenty of fruit and veg and you should be ok.

Having veg junk food and depending on tablets is not a proper diet.
Get a diet chart prepared for you and start having nutritious food.

I have experienced no more fatigue than I did before becoming a vegetarian and I'm not eating a totally balanced diet nor am I taking any supplements.

no, it's helped me become more energized. you might now be eating enough of something, or it might be another problem all together.

Absolutely not. Try cutting out caffeine.

Not eating right can make you tired.

Seems like you aren't getting enough iron in your diet.

I did it for 10 days. and was tired, next day, had meat, and felt better. low iron i guess.
it did make me sad to eat the burger...but I could not stand being tired.
