Where can I get vitamin b12 from?!

Question: Where can I get vitamin b12 from?
Answers:

The simple way to get b12 would be from a supplement. The body requires only about 2.4 mcg per day. However since b12 that is ingested from a supplement is poorly absorbed, you should take about 1000 mcg sublingually. There is also a b12 patch, I would do your research before using this. Dumb Texan had it right with Red Star and cereal. You can sprinkle a tablespoon or so of nutritional yeast on your food. I have used it in pasta sauces and such but I think it would also work well on baked or mashed potatoes (it has sort of a cheesy flavor). Nature's Path Optimum Power is a cereal with b12 that is easy to find in your local health food store. You can also get b12 injections but there is no proof that they are any better for you than sublingual supplements. Hope that helps!

Personal experience and internet articles.

B12 is only available naturally in food from animals, meat, eggs, dairy products. If you don't eat those on a regular basis, you can take shots from your doctor, pills from a pharmacy, or eat highly processed foods that has manufactured B12 added. A B12 deficiency is very serious. From VeganHealth:

"Overt B12 Deficiency

B12 protects the nervous system. Without it, permanent damage can result (e.g., blindness, deafness, dementia). Fatigue, and tingling in the hands or feet, can be early signs of deficiency.

Vitamin B12, like folate (aka folic acid), is needed to help red blood cells divide. In some cases, vegans may get so much folate that even with B12 deficiency, their blood cells continue to divide properly. In other cases, their blood cells will fail to divide properly and they will become fatigued and suffer from macrocytic (aka megaloblastic) anemia.

Mild B12 Deficiency

Homocysteine is a byproduct of protein metabolism. Elevated homocysteine levels are linked with increased risks of heart disease and stroke. From 1999 to 2003, there were many studies comparing the homocysteine levels of vegans and vegetarians who do not supplement their diet with vitamin B12 to those of non-vegetarians (more info). In every study, the vegans or vegetarians had higher homocysteine levels than the meat-eaters and in the range associated with heart disease and stroke."

Take a CHEWABLE supplement, or fortify with the following foods:

Eggs are a natural source of B12
Dairy is a natural source of B12
Many cereals are fortified with B12
Many "faux" milks like soya and oat are fortified with B12.
Red Star yeast contains B12, as does marmite. Look for fortified with B12 yeasts.

You also get B12 from bacteria, which is everywhere. That's where cows and chickens get it. But for the bacteria to survive in the intestines, you need to get off things like raw garlic & onion, vinegar and chlorine in tap water.

check for yourself.
