Answers:
Pick one of the Haas varieties (very dark green or blackish skin, small; NOT the huge bright green ones) and if you intend to use it that night, pick one that slightly yields to fairly firm finger pressure. If it does, then check it for bruises or squashed places. Do not buy any that are soft and mushy.

If you want it to ripen in a couple days, pick one that does not yield to fairly firm pressure. Set them in a windowsill, ona countertop, or if in a hurry, ina brown paper bag w/ an apple or banana to hurry the ripening.

when there almost black not way to soft or rock hard either.

One thats softer. And the darker it is the more ripe it is.

p.s. over ripe ones still make great guacamole

By feel... if it's too soft, it's too ripe and if it's too hard, it's not ripe enough. It should feel like your wrist where your watch face with sit.

don't pick the green ones, they have to be a little black with green spots, never pick one that is very hard, just touch it and squeeze it a little bit, if you feel it a little soft then that is a good one, if they are too hard put them in one of your drawers and wait a couple of days and it will be good to it, enjoy!

.

squeeze it and if it is soft it is ripe and ready to use....
If it is hard it will have to sit for a few days till it softens so if you are wanting to use it now make sure you pick a soft one...
If you are going to wait a few days get one that is hard so it will soften....

If the skin has turned black or they are squishy, they are too ripe.

Dark green is good. That's when their nutrients peak. You don't want them hard. A little soft, but they should not squish.

In general, you'll want to look for one that is basically black in color, as opposed to green.

It should be firm, but should give a bit when you squeeze it. It should, in the long run, be about as squishy as a young banana. You'll want the firmness of the avocado to be uniform throughout the fruit. If there are spots that are softer than others, these are likely to be bruises, and they'll be brown on the inside.

by feel, you cant do it by colour as there are different varieties and most remain green, except for Hass which turns dark brown

Haas avocados are bumpy skinned and greenish black in color. They are ripe when you press them with your thumb and the flesh yields slightly. The darker, the riper. It shouldn't be mushy when you push with your thumb. If it's quite green and firm it will take a few days of sitting on your counter to ripen. There is a big bright green avocado variety, but I don't have much experience with them.

Ask help from the sales promoter.

i normally buy the ones that are a bit dark green and a bit firm. I normally use them the following day or so, so i prefere to buy some that are a bit firm. i don't like them to be mushy.

A ripe one would give slightly when you squeeze very lightly. Avoid the ones that are hard.

I think the softer the better!

Go to Safeway. Not only do they have organic now, but they'll cut open your produce for you to try until you find something that you like. (Go on an empty stomach). Have fun!
