You can offer to help cook. Go shopping for a vegetarian cookbook and try out some of the recipes. Or, find some free online. Certainly would give your mom a break if you offer to cook. Food always taste better when it is cooked for you. Get a few good recipes and offer to cook maybe, three days a week. There is always quick, easy and affordable recipes. If you are not to keen on alternative meats, like tofu hotdogs, etc., then make meals using beans, or refried beans in a can with low fat. You can make veggie tacos, no meat, just beans instead. You can make spaghetti with mushrooms instead of ground round. You can have a lot of fun. Hope your mom hears you this time.
I think thats awesome that you want to be a vegetarian and I think more people should become one.Its your decision and you have the right to make that choice to become one.Thats mild compared to what choices you could be making. So tell her that and make her understand that this is important to you and you would like her support.and if she loves youshe will stand by you.Plus you can tell her that you could be out smoking dope but instead you just wanna stop eating meat.
well tell her again so that you dont have to wait for that PRECISE right moment to tell her. again.
I only told my mother once. After that, I just started refusing meat when she offered it to me and when she asked what was going on, I told her I was a vegetarian.
It's really your decision, not your mother's.
Dear Twinkles,
Your Mom is probably overwhelmed by the thought of having to
cook not only the rest of the family's meals, but your new request
as well. And she is not sure you will be able to understand what
to eat. Why not ask her to cook one vegetarian meal a week and
that you will research it and help her. Every week you can cook
a new meal and then write it on a card and save the meals until
she feels more comfortable.
First there is protein and it has to be complete protein.
So, you will need Tofu or Soy beans, Aduki Beans, Navy Beans,
Chickpeas, Kidney Beans, black beans. You put 1 cup in a
pot (small soup pot), add at least 5 or 6 cups water and get a
seaweed called Kombu in the health food store. Add 1 1/2 inch
piece (they come in strips and you just cut them to size) to
the beans and water. Then add 1/2 tsp salt after they boil.
When they are done, taste and add salt a very little at a time
(pinches), taste again until you like the taste. The Kombu takes
away the gas YEA!! Beans are low in calories and high in
protein.
You also can try Tofu which comes from Soybeans. Get
a cake of Tofu in the store. Cut it into 1/4 inch strips and then
cook it in Canola or Safflower oil Just a little bit of oil like no more
than a tablespoon. Tofu forms its own crust. When it is a little
brown add Braggs Aminos. Braggs Aminos in a delicious soy
sauce. Add enough so, that the Tofu becomes a little brown.
one to two teaspoons.
All nuts are also protein. The best are Almonds and Walnuts.
You may have about 6 to 8 of nuts as a snack.
Seitan - You can make it or buy it. It tastes a little like meat
and is really wheat gluten. You can make sandwiches out of
it, adding mustard, mayo (eggless Mayo is the best) and
ketchup. Anytime you can afford organic, it's the best.
Veggies
You must have a big salad every day. And on top of that
you must have other cooked vegetables like Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Kabocha Squash, Butternut Squash,
Zucchini, Yellow squash, etc., Kale, Collard Greens, green beans, etc.lots more, Four to 6 servings of Vegetables a day.
Squash soup - This will surpise even Mom, it's so delicious:
This is best made with Kabocha squash found in supermarkets and health food stores and if you can afford
organic, do get it. You can also make it with Butternut. The difference between the two squashes is that Kabocha is always
deep orange and sweet. Butternut is only sometimes like that,
so we risk wasting our money. Kabocha needs a very sharp
knife to cut into it, so you may need some help. You cut it
into pieces about 2 inches long and boil it, saving the water.
If it is very big, you may serve 4 people with 1/3 of the squash.
If it is smaller, you may have to have 1/2 of the squash.
Now you have soft squash and you will need a Cuisinart or
a very good blender. You blend the squash adding enough
of the cooking water only to make a creamy (it thickly flows) soup. Then you add Bragg's Aminos(it's the soy sauce that so
good) until it tastes good and not too salty. And eat!! It's that
simple.
Get some vegetarian cookbooks from the library and go to it!
Don't forget to take a mineral vitamin and Vitamin b 12. The
mineral one daily and the b 12 once a week. It can be 3000 to 5000 mgs. It stores in the body and is used as needed.
Fruits. Don't overdue it. Two or three pieces depending on size
a day. An orange in the morning, an apple or banana in the after
noon, grapes or melon in the evening. Variety is very important.
You will also need Carbs in the form of rice, quinoa, buckwheat,
millet, cous cous and Cornmeal. From these you can make
any things.
Flax seeds or oil is also a good supplement. Talk to people
at the health food store, they will help.
Please don't go to fast. Learn as you go and Mom will learn
to supplementveggie meals at home which will be good for the
whole family.
Good luck,
Pua girl
