Veggie and or Vegan Jello/Jelly Substitutes. What do you think of them?!

Question:

Veggie and or Vegan Jello/Jelly Substitutes. What do you think of them?

I have never tried any of them and wouldn't eat jelly as a veggie (Nasty hoofs and bone marrow etc.) Also does anyone have any veggie or vegan trifle recipies?

Answers:
Hain sells packets of veggie 'jello' that aren't bad; that actually means that they really taste like Jello according to meat eaters I've fed the stuff to. I've made some using Xanthan and Locust gums before that tasted better! The only drawback to any that are vegan is they are slightly cloudy to opaque depending on which substitutes you use.

I have seen (and used) decent recipes for vegan trifle but my current cookbook collection doesn't have any (lost over 300 cookbooks in a fire a few years ago). I'll do some digging tomorrow and see what I can find.

edit:

Sigh, I couldn't find the recipe I was looking for(sorry). Am I correct in assuming that you need help with the 'jello' squares used in English trifle? If you can't find 'ready to go' packets let me know and I can shoot you how to 'roll your own' .

Agar-agar is a good Jello substitute. I had this snack pack thing one day and it was just like jello except it was vegan :]

Dole makes a fruit in gel that's just like jello but uses carrageenan.

Try using agar-agar!
If you never ate the bone variety you will not tell the difference anyway.

At last, there's an alternative to Jello that will be widely available. Hain SuperFruits is a dessert mix that can be used much the same way Jello is used. It comes in several flavors including kiwi/pineapple, berry medley, and orange pineapple. Hain Pure Foods products can be found in natural foods stores and supermarkets.

I worked in a Kosher Kitchen at a hotel for some time and we used a Gelatin product from Streit's, it is not a animal product, there are 2 vegetable products, the agar-agar or something carreagan, another seaweed product, both are completely vegan.
