Does chocolate soy milk have actual chocolate in it?!

Question:

Does chocolate soy milk have actual chocolate in it?

I am breastfeeding and my baby is very sensitive to dairy and chocolate so I wanted to try the chocolate soy milk but only if its not going to bother her.

Answers:
I believe it does have actual chocolate. Read the label. Theoretically, it shouldn't have dairy in it, but read the ingredients list for that too. You can also look for some sort of "Kosher-dairy" symbol (a common one is a U with an O around it; this is the certification symbol of the Union of Orthodox Congregations). Sometimes this means that the soymilk is processed on equipment which also processes dairy products. If it says "Kosher-pareve" or "Kosher-parveh," then it definitely does not have dairy or meat in it.

Wrote to a Jewish magazine asking why in the world a granola bar would be "Kosher-dairy" when there didn't seem to be any dairy ingredients in the ingredients list (reading labels trying to understand what actually is in food besides guar gum and partial hydrogenation).

Reading stuff trying to understand dietary restrictions (general interest).

All of the soy milk I've come across (even the generic store brand) do not contain dairy.

The chocolate variety usually has cocoa powder in it. Chocolate doesn't have to contain milk products. Only milk chocolate does. Dark chocolate does not and there are many other varieties of chocolate that do not contain dairy.

Just check the packaging for logos that say "Dairy Free" and read the ingredients. You can always call the 800# on the packaging just to be sure.

More info about cocoa powder can be found here: http://www.cookinglight.com/cooking/cs/a...

very unlikely that cocoa would pass through your milk & cause any harm. As pp said cocoa dosen't have dairy in it. Soy chocolate 'milk' is a good alternative.

That said.... really I wish you luck in keeping that stuff down...

Chocolate Silk is amazingly good! I could drink a whole carton.

And everyone is right....chocolate doesn't have milk in it.
Only milk chocolate does....that's why it's called that!

Breastfeeding is awesome and a wonderful thing to do for your child, but you're right, you do have to watch what you eat because it goes straight to the baby.

Most children can't have cow's milk - why do we think we can when we get older?? Very interesting. Even Dr. Benjamin Spock, who is considered the authority on childcare, became a vegan and advocated not to feed children meat or dairy.

Good luck with it! Here are so websites about Soymilk, vegetarianism, and breastfeeding.
