Question:

What does the "Nip" mean in turnip & parsnip?

Answers:
It derives from "neep", an old norse term, but it gets rather vague as to why they called it as such

bit one and see!!

what a weird qestion!!!..a bit like asking what does the EX mean in sex???

It refers to the Nipple or Teat at the end.

The name "Parsnip" comes from the French pastinaca and the "nip" added to indicate its resemblance to the turnip.

It's from an old scottish word meaning mash 'neep'

does it refer to the bite or harshness, nee acidity when bitten into when raw? not all cultures cook vegies, ingested, in natural state.
