Please help, need advice on veggie roommate?!
Please help, need advice on veggie roommate?
I have a veggie roommate that has been getting real weak and having fainting spells. Since going on this fad veggie diet, she has become very pale and skinny. I am really concerned for her health. What can I do to convince her to start eating a well balanced diet?

minty, thanks for the advice. I totally agree with you. I am going to go buy some meat and fish and see if she will eat a little of that.

Nick L, I have reported you.
she needs to start adding vitamins to her diet... make sure she eats dark green leafy veggies, like spinach, she needs fiber... she should really put some protein in her diet too... maybe encourage wholesome cheese, yogurt, milk, i know some vegetarians do not eat dairy, but at least try and encourage it... also maybe some nuts... she shouldn't just be eating white bread, she needs bread high in wheat/grains, you can get bread that has protein in it too... maybe you could go rent/buy some books and research some things yourself, and make sure you know alot of information to share with her... good luck!!
I know she's a vegitarian, but get her to eat some meats, its probably the only way she will be able to survive now!
Get first 'Dibs' on her shoe's.....
get her to a doctor,
You should talk to her and bring her to a psychiatrist or something. show her that being weak isn't healthy at all.
this could be from some other under line condition,
she should go to the doctors
Being a vegetarian can be perfectly healthy, provided that one is willing to shell out the $$$ for quality food.
Why convince anyone of anything? It isn't your life or body at this time is it?
She really needs to see a doctor, but the first recommendation is to take some iron, this can be taken in tablet form, in spinach or my favourite Guinness!
She needs protein & iron. Try peanut butter & spinach (not together!). There are LOTS of non-meat foods that provide these nutrients.
It may not be in your power to convince her but you could get her to aknowledge her problem and suggest she sees a doctor
You dont need meat in a balanced diet. Lentils and beans provide all the protein the body needs. Im guessing shes just not eating enough.
if she's a good friend, she'll just listen if you sit her down and give her reasons. if not, go to your college counseling center and get an appointment for her.
just because shes a vegetarian doesnt mean she should be experiencing these problems,it could be that shes undereating in general
.i don't care what anyone says, we are not meant to be vegetarian . cavemen eat meat !!!
get some meat down her and fish . she will soon get the protein she needs
don't get her to go to see the doc get some chocolate in and fruit orange cook bacon and meat with onions in
good luck
not much u can do shes gotta wake up and realize that its hurting her until she does no one can change her mind
She needs a B12 shot and advice on eating disorders from a GP (stat)
Try suggesting that she go in to her doc for an annual check up. Or make an appointment for her and tell her it is really for you and you want her to go along with you. If you go this route, make sure you explain to the office staff what is going on. Have her parents or someone close to her discuss their concerns about her help and urge her to seek help.
If worse comes to worse and she absolutely refuses to get help....call an ambulance the next time she faints. Hopefully they will get her to an emergency room. Best of luck to you and your roommate.
im a vegetarian and have been since i was 8 and im very fit and healthy!!as she is new to this she is obiviously unaware on the best thing to eat..she needs proteins..she needs tofu, lentils, pulses and vegetables and rice..a veggie burger just doesnt do the trick...visit your nearest holland and barrat or health shop and ask for advice and help on cooking up these things...another good thing for her to take is a B VITAMIN.this will help a lot as well as amulti vitamin while she is still learning to cook the best foods!!good luck x
I'm not a vegetarian/vegan whatever, but I've known a few - it's perfectly possible to have a healthy diet without using animal products, but you need to take a little more care to ensure your body gets everything it needs.
If she's losing weight, fainting, whatever, consider the possibility that it's not her diet that's causing these symptoms.
It's nice to know she's got a friend who cares.
If she's not eating iron rich foods to supplement her vegetarian diet then the chances are that she is anaemic and the severity which you describe is extremely alarming. Surely she must realise that she is endangering her health?
You need to encourage her to visit her doctor or a nutritionist but if she is really digging her heels in then I would suggest researching vegetarian recipes on the internet and cook her meals that are rich in iron (make sure she has a glass of pure orange juice with her meals as this aids iron absorbtion)
Have a look at the following link and maybe print her out a copy.

eat her. ummmmm deep fried...
I had that problem when I first became a vegetarian..
before she was vegetarian did she eat a lot of meat?
If she did she could be eating less food,as she has cut out meat from her diet.
You should get her some mock-meat,I love the stuff!!
And it will probably get her eating better too.. :]
It contains NO meat but tastes just like the real thing..
My favourite are the Quorn Chicken Style Nuggets.. (notice the 'style' part)
Maybe get her to eat vegetables or a salad as a side dish for the mock meat.
Actimel everyday helped me too..
I really do hope I've helped!!
And I wish your friend all the best!!
Good Luck!!

A vegetarian diet can and should be well balanced. It needs to include much more than just the salad vegetables....... beans, peas, lentils, rice, whole grains, oils, nuts, fruits, etc. If the roomie is trying to live on iceberg letuce, she's definitely going to become run down. You could try cooking some vegetarian recipes and sharing them with her. Hopefully she would include cheese in her diet, because it's great protein and the cow does not have to die to share some of it's milk. Try making her some veggie lasagne, some nachos with cheese & beans & salsa, some hearty healthy dishes. There's some great websites with the vegetarian food pyramid and great recipes & tips to be healthy.
Tell her that you admire her willpower and that she is sticking by her principles but that you are concerned for her health (flattery works wonders!). In order to help her stick by her principles and keep up the new vegetarian lifestyle whilst staying healthy she should go and see the doctor to check that there is no underlying condition causing this and to reccommend a dietician/nutritionist to help her maintain a healthy vegetarian lifestyle!
Flattery and/or bribery generally work wonders I find and if it helps her to be healthy it won't harm! Don't try to force her to eat meat as that could only make matters worse for your friendship.
It is not due to vegetarianism .Tell her to go to a GP she may be ill with something else. Vegetarian or vegan is a very healthy balanced diet! TVM!

Show us a photo of yourself, I dare you!!
Stop reporting Nick, Foxie that is so predictable!
She should probaly have a check up with a Dr. could be something else causing the fainting spells, better to be safe than sorry...as for the vegan diet I'd advise her to get better educated at what she can consume...she may not be balancing her meals just right...

What might be the real reason for reporting me of all the others who do not share your view?
Answer:- I'm onto your case, and ruining your little game.
Are you the only one able to report?
Even as a Hindu let me quote from the Bible.
(You can not accuse me of pushing Hinduism, then)
And God said, "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is a living soul, I have given every green herb for food: and it was so." ~God, Genesis 1:29-30

As for the protein myth:-
With the traditional Western diet, the average American consumes about double the protein her or his body needs. Additionally, the main sources of protein consumed tend to be animal products which are also high in fat and saturated fat. Most individuals are surprised to learn that protein needs are actually much less than what they have been consuming. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein for the average, sedentary adult is only 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight.2 To find out your average individual need, simply perform the following calculation:
* Body weight (in pounds) X 0.36 = recommended protein intake

Where is the need to eat meat, so full of cruelty to our fellow beings?
The nickname 'flower f' must be of the 'foxhunter_guy'.
The opinions are the same and the new nickname starts with an 'f'. What is the second 'f' for? 'foxhunter'?
I too would be concerned for her health.
Its right that you come to the veggie and vegan section to ask about helping someone who is weak or pale, as V&V diets are probably the healthiest and the surest way to get her well again.
Tell her to eat a good balance of fruit, vegetables and nuts. No need to include any meat, fish or poulty in any diet so she'll be just fine if she has a balanced diet.
get her to a doctor
