he had to hunt his own prey?
Many meat eaters come to this section and make incredibly stupid remarks. I guess it's easy to do if they can just go to the market and buy a slab of flesh already killed and packaged for them but I wonder how it would be for them if the only way to get meat was to hunt or have their own supply of animals that they would have to kill themselves.
Most omni's I know would never dream of killing a chicken and then eating it but if the dirty work is already done?
Answers:
In many cases it doesn't even take that! Just show them a feedlot and slaughterhouse! The sounds, smells and general *filth* tends to make (at least temporary) converts quickly
I once took a believer in 'organic free range poultry' for a visit to a relatives certified 'organic' 'free range' chicken/egg farm
YOU ARE RIGHT. I WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME EATING MEAT IF I HAD TO SLAUGHTER AND DRESS MY OWN FOOD. BUT MY HUSBAND IS CAPABLE OF IT AS THAT WAS HOW HE WAS RAISED WHERE I WAS INNER CITY, HE LIVED IN THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS. WHERE WE LIVE NOW, HAS FEED LOTS AND SLAUGHTER HOUSES FOR CATTLE. IT IS HARD TO SMELL THEM AND THEN EAT THE FOOD.
ACTUALLY I DON'T EAT AS MUCH MEAT AS I DO EVERYTHING ELSE AND PREFER MOST VEGATABLES, GRAINS, AND FRUITS. BUT I STILL ALSO LIKE TO EAT MEAT.
oh most definately, they are all tough as long as they dont have to do the dirty work themselves
Not only that, but seeing what, exactly, they are eating! Chicken McNuggets looks fine when deep-fried, but when you see the tumors and pus on the diseased meat before its processed, who would even think about touching it?
If she/he visited a farm and met the "food" animals.
Most boys probably would, most girls wouldn't. I would.
No. I was raised in the country. I have helped to clean Chickens, Turkeys, Pigs & Fish. It is unpleasant but rewarding because you are working for your meal literally.
You're 100% right. Sure there are a lot of omnis out there who do their own hunting and killing, but there are definitly lots who don't associated meat with the living form of a creature just because those thoughts gross them out, or they wouldn't be able to handle being directly responsable for some creature's deaths.
By husband(who loves his fried chicken, ribs, etc.) was really desperate for a job at one point, and the only available thing in our area was warking in the slauter house. As much of a meat eater he is, he chose going jobless a little longer than working there because he was completely disturebed the the whole idea.
I think if we were forced to be independant hunters and gatherers, there would be a lot more veggie lover out there.
there would be more vegans for sure.If slaughterhouses had glass walls...
That would convert most of them if they had to hunt, kill and prepare their own meat, the stragglers would be those trully heartless, ignorant creatures that we don't want to know anyway!! I had this 'friend' who was a diabetic. She kept on asking the question about meat substitutes. After having patiently explained six times this wore very thin especially when she was loudly pointing this out " These vegetarian s are hypocrites.......etc"
Just to illustrate how daft this ex-pal is:-
Her other twisted views on life are . "It is ok for me to eat loads of non-diabetic chocolate as long as I inject myself with insulin!!!" (No,
that aint the point of insulin....)
"The Boys wont let Me watch, SATC/ DesparateHouswives/Lost etc, so
I just watch my portable TV/DVD." (It's your lounge too!)
"Kids will just go to sleep when they are ready, they don't need a bed time!!" (Mum and dad need them to have one though, her kiddies are still walking the floor at 10.30!!!)
"Andie, you don't have Hazel eyes that is utter rubbish, people with hazel eyes are liars, they have either brown eyes or green eyes. Hazel does not exist in my book, It is a figment of their imaginations they are just attention starved people who want to make themselves feel special!!!!" (I think I swore at her, we didn't speak for a couple of days. My eyes are a mixture of brown and green with gold flecks a blue outline around the pupil and the 'Whites' are a lovely pale blue colour, they are my best feature I love them, pretty good figment of my imagination don't you think !?!?!?)
I think many would, in fact that's the reason I became vegetarian myself. Not that I had to hunt my own prey, but when I was 15 and first became interested in cooking, I realised that I was too grossed out to buy or handle raw meat (this point was driven home by a visit to the butcher's with my mother) and then it occurred to me that it was kind of hypocritical of me to continue eating something which I couldn't bear to touch in its raw state.
I know this is the case for my husband, too - he continues to eat meat but doesn't like to see or touch it raw so needless to say he only has it at restaurants or on pizza and we never cook it at home. But here in France most people find this concept absurd and have absolutely no problem with raw meat. They walk past butcher's displays filled with cow's heads and whole suckling pigs and don't even flinch. I don't know if they would go so far as to actually hunt their own prey but it wouldn't surprise me. If anything it would be the time and effort involved which would put them off.
Agreed. Most people would not be able to kill an animal with their bare hands. Convenience allows humans to be ignorant and pay others to kill animals for them.
To be honest, I'm a vegetarian but if I go fishing (quite often) or hunting (not so often) I eat the meat.
I'm a vegetarian, not because I feel sorry for the poow widdle bunny wabbits but as a protest to production methods. I think we should all go out and hunt our own meat. It should not be available through mass production. THATS whats unnatural, not killing and eating animals... in my opinion
animals meant to eat meat have good claws, teeth, and speed.. i think we as humans are physically pathetic.. they way we kill our food and everything.. we were never meant to eat meat, so i don't see why a majority of people do.
