Vegetarianism is the practice of living on products of the plant kingdom, with or without the use of eggs and dairy products, but excluding entirely the consumption of any part of the body of an animal as food (including chicken, fish and seafood). The term "vegetarian" means a person who follows such practice, or describes such a person, creature, establishment or food pertaining to vegetarianism.

broken down

Often broken down further into OVO-LACTO, and LACTO. Vegetarians may or may not try and minimize their non food use of animals like vegans.

Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian: also eats eggs and milk products. This is the most 'popular' form of Vegetarianism in many Western countries..

Lacto Vegetarian: Same as VEGAN, but also eats milk products.

Vegan: excludes animal flesh (meat, poultry, fish and seafood), animal products (eggs and dairy), and usually excludes honey and the wearing and use of animal products (leather, silk, wool, lanolin, g

I was just going through the questions and questioned the same thing. What I am noticing more and more is that when I let people know I am vegetarian they ask me if I eat fish. THAT IS NOT A VEGEATARIAN, never has been, never will be. It seems that with this now common misconception people call themselves vegeatarian because of a simple diet change like no longer eating beef. Could it be that "being a vegetarian" is now en vougue??

for the record... YOUR question just came up in the Food & Drink section... .so that's probably the reason why.

When you post your next question state what a vegan is. That might help. Some people are just on here for kicks too. Who knows why people say the things they do.

I think because a lot of people are casual vegaterians, myself included, and predominately think that vegaterian means it lacks a specific cut of meat. Its akin to the problem with all natural vs. organic and a lack of understanding. Does FDA or USDA have a legal definition of vegetarian and vegan in the US?

I don't think many people know what is in their food. I would guess that most people know what vegan and vegetarian mean, but our food is so processed and prepackaged now that most people have no idea what they're eating.

People don't really understand and don't fully read the questions.

I'm disappointed in c'est moi's response but it illustrates my feeling that a *lot* of people aren't paying attention to the sub-category headers and just start answering questions from the 'genre' heading of Food&Drink.

There are also the insecure buffoons that need the emotional boost they get by baiting vegheads.

You've got the people that think saying "i'm a vegetarian" makes them one (and yet don't have a clue).

Finally, there have been a few 'radical' veggie type conducting "false flag operation" type Q&A sessions in here! I hunted down and nailed one them.

The *BEST* way to cut down on this garbage is to report abusive questions and be sure to add in the text box that this section *needs* a moderator. Thumbs down the abusive answers and when possible send a politely worded email 'nastygram' asking them to mend their ways or move to a category they are qualified to answer in. For the really bad offenders-report them for point gaming!

all the answers???

Most people do not know what gelatin is and I bet many don't know about fish being in caeser dressing.

I think that some of the people are purposely placing questions in this category to be insulting. Some are also unaware of what a vegetarian or vegan is.
