Popcorn Alternatives?!
Popcorn Alternatives?
My family loves popcorn, but I don't like to use corn products anymore, due to the amount of genetic manipulation involved. Is there another grain that will pop in a similar fashion to popcorn?
Answers:
You can pop wild rice (pure wild rice -- not the packaged stuff that's mixed with brown rice and spices) just like you can pop popcorn. Just put a tablespoon or so in a large metal sieve, place the sieve in enough hot oil to cover the rice, and shake gently until popped.
It will take several batches to make a serving, and you can sprinkle it with maple sugar or salt. This is an old Ojibway way to fix wild rice, and the maple sugar variation is particularly good!

Never heard of one but my dad used to fry puffed rice as a snack.

How about organic?
I really not know. I love popcorn. I figure most foods today are genetically altered. Look at Turkeys, heck, they so genetic that the producers inject them with a masking agent to protect the DNA Code from being stolen. It is true, I not have to lie, it was on a Documentary how they being raised for larger breast meat. Showed one Turkey was too heavy to stand up and they explained how they trying to make their legs stronger to support the massive breast weight.
"Through genetics, Nicholas developed faster-growing turkeys that more efficiently converted feed into meat. That made turkeys -- once an expensive specialty served only at holidays -- affordable to American families all year long".
Sorry I went from popcorn to Turkeys, but, want to educate a little about genetics and food.
