Are soy products bad for you?
Someone I know has a nutritionist who told them not to eat any soy products. If you are vegetarian - this severely limits your options. No soy sauce on sushi - soy milk and cornflakes - all restaurants cater to vegetarians with the use of tofu in everything. I'm searching the web to find out the negatives of soy products and convince this person to come back to soy!! They mentioned something about how it was processed and if taken in high doses can be harmful. Someone clear this myth!

Apparently there is some link with soy beans having high amounts of estrogen in them. How this is negative to the body - I'm still researching.

I read an article in the San Francisco Chronicle September-ish 2006 that said "soy is bad" or "uncooked soybeans are bad" or something like that. I'm sure it caused much debate in Lower Haight and the Mission District.
Here is the article:

I love edamame but quit eating it after reading that article.
Go to the "Soy Controversy" section in wikipedia:

I believe in soy. I use it a lot. You can read this if you wish.

Some people get bad gas from soy. It's usually processed with a lot of sodium, so it's not real good for people with sodium induced high blood pressure. Other than that, it should be okay.
It's high in sodium, and there are a lot of soy products I can't eat because I am allergic to peanuts, and soybeans have been crossed with peanuts on lots of plantations in the US.
Not at all
Check out vegetarian Indian food, particularly south Indian food. Neither soy nor meat is present in the traditional Indian diet. But the downside is that Indian food takes a long time to prepare.
By the way, I think anything in high doses is harmful. Tofu is no exception. I have experienced decreases in libido after eating lots of tofu.
Where did you hear this? I'm pretty sure that it's just a myth.
soy is heart healthy. heeearrrt heeeeealllthy!
ha ha
um...no none of that bull. it's good for you, keeps you healthy. why else would so many people eat it everyday?
There is some question about soy and thyroid problems in women.
Soy is good in moderation, as is being well-informed.
Tamar hit the answer on the head. It seems that there may be a link to
problems in the thyroid. I have also heard that soy is almost always
sprayed with Round up. Soy is one crop that they have genetically
modified in order to be able to spray it with Round Up. Yet another
reason to distrust soy. I stick to products that are organic. As far as
the thyroid thing goes I agree with her that we should all practice
moderation in all things.

The only legitimate problem I've heard of with soy is it's high content of IGF-1 (Insulin like Growth Factor-1). This substance can accelerate aging, and encourage cancer growth. As far as I know IGF-1 is only present in large quantity's in processed soy foods (Isolated soy protein). But the amount present is actually larger then in dairy products. Presence of IGF-1 is one of the many negatives of dairy products. Visit this web site: www.vegsorce.com for more information.
Soy is pefectly fine ... just in moderation. As long as your not eating it every day .. its fine.
Soy not the evil. The evil comes when too much sodium is added to the product to make it palatable. Watching the ratio of potassium to sodium should be the focus. There should be a minimum of twice as much potassium as sodium in anything we eat.
