I'm a vegetarian?!
I'm a vegetarian?
I'm going to a dinner with some vegetarians from work, and for the most part it's all veggie dishes, which is great; however, they're also serving fish and a lot of them seem to tink it's acceptable to eat it.
So I'm wondering, is it standard or at least tolerable to eat fish. Or are they a certain cliqe of vegetarians, or what!
Answers:
You'll probably find that most vegetarians these days will eat fish, milk products, and cheese and eggs. They are what is known as a "uvo-lacto-vegetarian". If someone is more hrdcore than that, thy are often referring to themselves as vegans, which is an entirely different movement again, but those guys won't touch anything tht has been near an animal. So, the safe thing to ask might be "do you eat any animal products at all?" That way, you won't have any uncomfortable moments.
oh please, if you want to eat fish then eat it and don't judge others
Don't eat fish. It is killing and very bad for you. Real vegetarians don't eat fish or eggs/ milk is good.
It is up to the individual. If you are not a strict vegetarian, fish may be tolerable to you. Some vegetarians refrain from eating any animal products, some will eat certain animal products, but refrain from meat, some eat fish, some even claim to be vegetarians and eat chicken, but not red meat.
Go with your own beliefs.
fish isnt veggiiieee
Vegetarian is a general term used to describe someone that does not eat meat which includes fish. So these people are not really vegetarians. They have some of the vegetarian lifestyle by not eating red meats. It is really all in the persepective of the person. I was a vegetarian for a year because I just did not like meat and needed to get my protien from elsewhere so I went on a vegetarian diet. Some people go on vegetarian diets to be healthy while some are more activists that are concerned with the way animals are treats and some do not think we should kill animals. For some reason a lot of vegetarians and I use the word vegetarian losely think that it is fine to eat fish. While I am not all too clear as to why it might have something to do with that they don't see them as meat or an animal. In any case however this is not standard with people who are vegetarians due to the fact that fish is a meat and an animal.
Vegetarian encompasses a wide range of dietary habits-from vegan (nothing animal related) to "no meat on the bone...." It's all a matter of personal preference and what you are comfortable with. Do what feels correct for you and let everyone else do the same. It's always hoot to hear a "I'm more vegetarian than thou" conversation.
One thing to consider is why you are following a vegetarian diet. If it is for ethical reasons, do you also eschew leather, etc? Lots to consider, but again, it's all a matter of personal choice
some do eat fish and seafood but it is hard to call yourself vegetarian. The lacto-ovo vegetarians eat cheese, milk and eggs....but I guess if you are comfortable with eating it, by all means go ahead.....if you are doing it just to please them, I think you should decline the offer and stay true to yourself....remember, you chose to change your eating for a reason....don't forget why you are a vegetarian. Fish bleed and feel pain....although many people do not even believe animals feel pain....which is a sad thing to believe......enjoy your meal and your co workers.....if you eat fish then enjoy!!!
I'm a vegetarian and eat fish... only because my mom makes me.
Pescaterian - a veg who also eats fish.
They exist. I'm one and have been for 15+ yrs.
If they eat fish, they are pescetarians.
I beg you, PLEASE tell them this.
As a vegetarian, I hate being made to feel rude when someone goes "oh, you're a vegetarian, so I made you this fish dish". & I have to go "I'm sorry, I don't eat fish" & they look at you like you're directly trying to hurt them! I appreciate the effort, but I am a VEGETARIAN.
I wish people would use the terms correctly so the general public doesn't get confused.
Fish = Meat!
Vegetarian = one who doesnt eat meat.
Some vegitarians eat fish because fish do not have nerves, therefor do not feel anything. So essentially the animal did not go through pain to die, but I still wouldn't eat fish.
Your co-workers are not vegetarians at all. Most of the answers given here are 100% WRONG.
Vegetarians do not eat the flesh of animals. Fish are animals. Fish have nerves. Fish feel pain. They fight to live.
Someone who eats fish is NOT a vegetarian. For some reason they want the label, but they don't want to live the lifestyle.
eating it one time won't hurt you, be polite and do what you want to/what feels right. Or just tell them you don't eat fish. I'm sure they'll understand.
I just have this fact to give, because I found it shocking(!!!):
"the populations of just about all seafood face collapse by 2048." (Some say it may be less than that).
If you want to eat it who cares what other people think just eat it.
