I had a vegetarian accident. help!?!

Question:

I had a vegetarian accident. help!?

I'm 15 years old and i'm a vegetarian. I have been one most all of my life. I decided to eat campbells potato and brocolli soup for lunch today and I just found out that there was chicken stock and chicken fat in it. I tried puking it up, but it wouldn't come back up. I'm sitting here crying and I don't know what to do. I feel so horrible and disgusting, like such a bad person. I need advice from other vegetarians. has this ever happened to you before. What should I do?

Gertie, I would just like to let you know that what you said was very rude and mean to me and all vegetarians. Just because you don't agree with a vegetarian lifestyle doesn't give you the right to curse at those who do. Thank you to everyone else. You are very supportive and you made me feel much better. I have also learned my lesson from now on to read the labels and to be more careful. Thank you again to everyone. You people are amazing. God bless and Happy Holidays.

First, you're still a vegetarian, and you're not a bad person because this. Making yourself throw up is bad for you, you could have hurt yourself.

Yes it happens, at sometime you're going to eat something and it's going to have some type of meat in it. What do you do? Well, read what's in the soup first, IE read the labels. Be a little more careful. Then get on with life. You can't change what happen all you can do is be more careful in the future. You had a bad experience and hopefully learned a lesson.

Go in Peace.

You are still a vegetarian, because you did not INTEND to eat it.

You should grow up and stop acting like a spoilt child.

don't worry about it. and, there is no need to try and throw it up... just read the label next time.

I am not a vegetarian, so you may not take me seriously, but I have several friends who are. Try not to feel so horrible because you ate it unknowingly. There is nothing you can do at this point but forgive yourself.

It's okay. You shouldn't feel bad because it was only an accident. Next time, just be more careful when you eat. Don't worry too much.

Try not to worry about it. It wont kill or hurt you. If you are going to practice the veggie lifestyle, just try to be more aware of what you are eating.

Hope this helps a bit

It's not the end of the world. I would feel worse if I had the bulimic experience that you mentioned.

Well, lesson learned. Campbell's is about the worst company around for sticking in small amounts of animal what-not in its products. I have no idea why; many of their soups look like they should be vegetarian, but near the end of the ingredient list there'll be "beef tallow" or something else similarly unnecessary.

At least it's crummy soup. Eat a better brand next time.

I wouldn't worry about it at all; I'm sure 99% of vegetarians who eat in restaurants consume trace amounts of meats from time to time. Very few would try to puke and then cry, though -- I think that's your bigger worry.

First off, relax. Secondly, I would avoid Campbell's soups because they often contain beef or chicken stock in an otherwise purely vegetable soup. Truth in labelinig is the issue here, not your dedication to vegetarianism. You did not likely ingest very much anyway. Good Luck and Best Wishes.

I am not a vegetarian, but I have a few relatives that are. Trust me, this will happen from time to time, but there's little you can do about it.
More carefully read the label next time. But if it's unintentional try not to beat yourself up too much.

It has happend but by no fault of mine. I make sure I read all labels very carefully. What should you do? There is nothing you can do but be more careful.

Blimey Gertie's got issues :(

Take no notice. You made a mistake that went against your beliefs, it doest matter honey. Push it aside and move on. Be happy that you have the compassion to care about animals, that makes you a good person, not bad.

It's okay. Sure, you feel nasty, but just use this as a lesson for the future. I never eat anything without reading the label (or asking very specific questions if it is restaurant food.) Certainly, you are not a bad person for eating the chicken broth. All you can do is live and learn.

BTW, it happens to the best of us. My first vegetarian Thanksgiving, I ate a piece of pumpkin pie, then found out it had gelatin in it. I felt pretty skeevy, but, lesson learned. :0)

Yes that has happened to me before. You just go on about your life. You will be ok. I know that mentally it can be upsetting so try drinking lots of water and think about how the water is washing you clean.

This sometimes happens, but don't worry! It's gonna be okay. I understand the crappy feeling you are having right now, but just realize that you didn't purposely ingest the chicken stock and that should be enough to make you feel better.

girl, relax. it wasn't your fault. you didn't know. look in the mirror, take a deep breath, and say, "it's okay, one little accident...no big deal."

luck

".......I tried puking it up....."

This is quite sad!!! I sometimes question the mental stability of some folks!!

Mr Happy
:o)

This does happen sometimes, don't beat yourself up about it. Just consider it a lesson learned about reading labels. I'm a former vegetarian who fell off the wagon because my pregnancy caused meat cravings. Imagine craving a cheeseburger and wanting to puke because it's a cheeseburger!

aaww that's ok. don't fret about it...i accidently did that once w/o realizing it. don't feel bad. you probably are still a good vegetarian.

your not a bad person.... i mean you have gone 15 yrs without eating meat.... and this was just a mistake u didnt no u were eating chicken.... so dont stress so much!
my mum was a vegetarian for 30 yrs and when she got pregnant the doctors told her she had to start eating red meats because she needed more iron than what the tablets could give her!!! n she felt really really bad about having to eat it!

Hello. I have been a vegetarian since 1974, and I have been a vegan, ( a term I abhor because a " vegetarian" by definition and logic should not eat fish, fowl or flesh, or any of their derivatives or products, such as butter, cheese, honey or milk) since 1990. Don't worry about it!!! All of us have been fooled, or smply made a mistake from time to time. Don't vomit, you need your strength. Bye.

holy crap, thats about the funniest thing I've read all day! What would you have done if you were all alone and had no one to tell you how to live? You seem pretty intelligent, but you need to realize that it's really okay to eat flesh. It's just fuel. Your body will process it and return it to the planet just like it's a veggie. Everything that comes around, goes around.
peace

I think you are taking it a bit far. You could have had the same thing happen to you in a restaurant and you would never have known the difference. It's not like you are going to the butchers to go and get meat or anything. Just read the label next time and don't worry about it. Most companies put this sort of stuff in instead of artificial flavours etc.

Relax honey. I know it sucks and I have been there. I love broccoli soup and was very upset to learn they put chicken stock in it.

So long as you realized your mistake and avoid these products and read the label in the future, you're ok.

I don't really encourage the puking since this can be really bad for you and no use crying over split milk.

First congratulations on being so concerned about your health and diet to become a vegetarian. Its not easy. I've been a vegetarian for 20 years. Its happened to me too.
If it says vegetable soup on it it shouldn't have meat in it, stock or not. am i right?
Don't get down on yourself. The chicken stock will pass through your system pretty quickly as it was highly diluted in a liquid state. You didn't do it intentionally. You probably feel horrible because you have meat product in you, not that you're a bad person. What can you do? Its done and over with . Move on. Keep on your vegetarian routine and
READ THE LABEL BEFORE you buy it or eat it. read the label. best advice I got.

Hey, don't worry about it. I've had that happen to me a couple of times. Just remember it wasn't your fault and ensure you read the ingredient list next time. Also make sure you enquire about soup stocks in restaurants. You're not a bad person, k?

Kelly K, your mom's doctors were morons. I can't imagine a competent doctor advising someone to eat meat. And how can meat contain more iron than a pill?

Yes this has happened to me before. You just move on and learn from the mistake you made. Don't beat yourself up. Life is all about learning. Next time you will know.

dont be too hard on yourself, i ate top ramen noodles for years before i looked at the ingredients in the flavoring and realized there was ground chicken and beef fat in it. i feel horrible, but i cant change the past and now i know to read the ingredients in all food that may contain animal products. it's ok, you'll be fine! you're not a bad person for making a mistake, just move on and never eat that soup again! =)

What I would do in a situation such as this (I'm a vegetarian too) would be to do a cleansing. I do these propably 1-2 times a year just to clean my system. Nothing major, just some Health food type intestinal cleansing.
