Pregnacy and Vegetarianism?!
Pregnacy and Vegetarianism?
With my first child I ate meat- we are trying again for our 2nd and I haven't eaten meat for almost a year now. I eat plenty of beans and vegetables, but am still a little worried about not eating meat throughout pregnacy? What should I be eating to get all of the nutrients that are in meat... besided eating meat itself for all you smart @sses out there :)

I was vegetarian when was pregnant with my twins and my sister has had two children and eaten a vegan diet all the time she was pregnant. My midwife was perfectly happ with my diet. There is some information on nutrition in the article sited below. If you have any concerns I should talk to your doctor/midwife.

Talk to your doctor. If you are eating a balanced, healthy diet as it is, you only have to add 150-200 more calories per day for your baby. Add some extra tofu or Boca each day, along with your pre-natal vitamin, and you will be fine.
I had a very healthy vegetarian pregnancy and my baby is very healthy. I went to the library and found books on vegetarian pregnancies. This will help you a lot as I don't know if you eat dairy or eggs. Just be sure to eat all your servings of fruits ,veggies and whole grains as well as beans and soy.be sure to take your prenatal vitamins while pregnant and if you haven't already take a folic acid supplement now. Good luck on conceiving we are also trying for our second child.:)
Theres isnt really anyway around. Most doctors would say eat fish ... just until your done breast feeding... you dont have to but its the easiest way to get all the nutrients
What are you concerned about??? My mom has always been vegetarian and I'm now a healthy young man. You're just falling for the crap that everyone says that meat is necessary for you, etc. Just curious, are you eating dairy or not? If you are, you have nothing to worry about. If you don't eat dairy or eggs, just include a Vitamin B12 pill daily and make sure you combine Vitamin C foods (fruits and veggies) with iron foods (beans and grains). That's it.
Just a little note of advice: Add flaxseed oil (or even microalgae) to your diet to increase the omega 3's (DHA from ALA) in your diet. Not only will they optimize your immmune system and the baby's, but data is coming in that it can optimize your baby's mental cognitive capacity, especially in the last trimester when the brain is developing the most.
Meat isn't essential to get all the proteins you need. You should eat more of these foods

*beans
*lentils
