Why dont vegetarians have a problem with feeding their pets meat?!

Question:

Why dont vegetarians have a problem with feeding their pets meat?

Answers:
I'm vegetarian (and used to be a vegan), but I feed my cat meat because he is a carnivore and it would be cruel and unhealthy to deny him his natural diet. I also give him fresh organic chicken & organic cat food - never mainstream commercial cat food, which frequently is full of rubbish (euthanised pets, roadkill, mouldy supermarket meat complete with packaging, etc! - check out http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/pe... ). Even if the food itself wasn't of poor quality, I also don't want to support the factory farming industry by buying him food made from non-organic meat.

I don't have a problem with animals (or people) eating meat, and never try to impose my views on others - I just prefer not to eat it, personally. I believe that vegetarians who don't feed cats and other carnivorous pets meat should not be keeping those pets in the first place if they can't accept their true nature.

Remember too that some people are vegetarians for health reasons, or because they simply don't like meat - not all vegetarians have an ethical problem with meat eating.

simple

i don't have a pet !

They do!!

Worse than that - why do some vegetarians insist on feeding carnivorous pets with vegetarian 'meat substitutes'?

because they really like meat their jus lying

some do. dogs can marginally survive on a non-meat diet, if properly supplemented, and there are vegetarian formulas avaiable at speciaty pet stores. cats cannot -- they are obligate carnivores, meaning they MUST eat meat to survive. so that being the case, they have no choice other than to not keep pets.

Because most of their pets aren't able to exist on a vegetarian diet.
If we're talking cats and dogs here, they are carnivorous in the main.
I'm sure if cats could survive on lettuce, then most vegetarians would be ecstatic.

Vegetarians are crazy. All they do is make up excuses about why eating meat is bad. They're hypocrits. If it's bad to kill living things then why do they kill plants? And if it's unhealthy then why do they give it to their pets? Who knows! They are crazy!

they do ... they feed them vegitarian dog food .. called vitalin i think

How do you know that they do? Maybe they force feed their dogs salad. Perhaps they just have vegetarian pets like rabbits or guinea pigs. That is a good question though.

Because some pets are meat eaters they will die with out it and it is not wrong to feed a pet meat like it is for a human to eat it we are not full carnivores

i;m a vegetarian i don't havea problem feeding my dog meat because its just what they eat its natural i don't have a problem with anyone because they eat meat

Vegetarians choose not to eat meat, feeding your pet a meat substitute is forcing your choice on your pet against their natural diet. I'm a strict vegetarian but don't force my beliefs on others in this way.

most pets can't be vegetarian, they need specific meat based diets

well cause dogs (for example), are meat eaters (carnivorous) , they wont be able to live long if only milk or bread or cheese is provided to them. On the contrary, humans can be able to survive without eating meat, by just eating fruits, grains, and vegetables....

But i will recommend plant eaters pets (omnivorous) to vegetarians, like chickens, .....etc :)

Unfortunately some of them do. Cats die from lack of taurine if fed a veggie diet. There's a veggie dog food called 'happidog' but it contains way too much soya, tvp and maize to be good for dogs and its best avoided.
The ones that do call themselves animal lovers, and love animals so much they can't bear to think of them being killed for food.
The ones that don't have a problem with it are animal lovers who realise that animals have different needs from themselves.

I'm a vegetarian.. and i don't have a problem feeding my dog meat because my dog enjoys it!!!!
I made this choose for myself....not for others!!!!!! Animals eat animlas in the wild!!!!!!!!!
My dog isn't on the top of the food chain like me!!!!!!
ANd i choose what i eat I"M A OMNIVORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
VEGETARIANS that feed dog sub-meat...... don't truly love thier dogs!!!!!!!

First, while some vegetarians do have a "problem" feeding their pets meat (those that require it), sometimes they buy food that is plant based with no meat added. Many animals actually require a meat based diet, therefore, it is not healthy to abstain from feeding them any. Cats and dogs for example are not really omnivores- they need meat in their diets. While we think of cats as eating "grass" and "plants" this actually serves the purpose of helping them to "vomit" hairballs.

Actually, dogs do not need meat in their diet, but it is better for them. There are many high-quality vegetarian options out there for dogs that put the dog in NO risk.

And cats need Taurine to be able to survive, and this is found only in meat. Some people do choose to feed their cats a vegetarian diet, but the still have to give a supplement that has taurine or the cat will die.

Your question is a generalization, and a bad one at that.

There are vegetarian and vegan formulas for both dogs and cats that vegetarians can feed to their pets if they choose to do so. (The cat food is supplemented with taurine and is nutritionally complete). Actually, if you knew where the meat came from that goes into pet food, you'd probably agree that vegetables are a better choice.. but that's another topic.

A collie in Australia lived to be 27 and subsisted on a vegan diet made up of 'human food' that it's owner fed it. So it can't be that bad for them :)

I personally do not feed my cats vegetarian diets as there is evidence that there is a higher rate of urinary tract problems on these diets. The meat that goes into pet food is meat that is not fit for human consumption. So in other words, this meat would just be thrown out otherwise. Yes, it is still supporting the industry, but not as directly as buying meat for human consumption.

Why on earth would they have a problem with it?

Not every vegetarian is in the save-a-cow racket.

Even if I was, who am I to argue with a cat?

Ask 1.

To put it in simple terms.. dogs are carnivores, they always have been.

Because our poor pets will die if we don't feed them meat.

Because I give my cat freedom of choice. I'm guessing that she personally isn't morally opposed to eating meat. I do have a friend that gives his three cats vegetarian cat food though.

One of my cats liked peas, the other one, baked beans!

But since I care about animals, and since cats are basically carnivores, I feed them what they need to keep them healthy and happy.

Since I care about animals I also don't eat them.

Problem? What problem?

It depends. Some facultative carnivorous animals (dogs) can be healthy on a vegetarian diet with supplements. Others (cats) are obligate carnivores.

well yes they do they could make there dog a vegi

Any time that you start out a question with a massive generalization like the one that you used, you've probably committed a logical fallacy from the very beginning. Unless you have spoken to every single vegetarian in the world, you have no way of knowing what *all* vegetarians do or don't have a problem with.

Some vegetarians may have a problem with feeding their animals meat, while others may not. It's obvious from a number of the replies here that not every vegetarian feels the same way about the issue. . .which means that your question is definitely based on a false initial premise.

Bottom line: if you're going to ask a loaded question like this in a Vegetarian and Vegan forum, try not to make so many errors in logic. It only makes you look silly.

I am a vegetarian, I own 3 dogs, 6 cats, and many many onther kinds of animals. But the reason why I don't have a problem feeding my dogs and cats dog and cat food has to do with the reason why I am vegetarian in the first place. I will explane... The way I see things, Humans are best suited to eat a vegetarian diet (I am not gonna bother to explane why because it would take a long time, and if you want to know just google it) Dogs and cats are suited to eating a carnivorous diet (but they can also do well on a vegan or vegetarian diet if fed properly) So yep thats my answer because dogs and cats are carnivores.

I am highly disgusted with the awfull conditions that the animals of today are raised and slaughtered, I wish I could feed my carnivorous animals meat that came from animals who were raised and slaughtered in a humane way. But I have no idea where to buy it or if i could afford it.
