Vegetarian-friendly countries?!

Question:

Vegetarian-friendly countries?

If I went travelling, what are the most vegetarian friendly, in terms of restaurants and dining? I've heard that #1 is India and #2 is Israel but I'm also interested in Europe and the rest of Asia.

Although everyone talks about the abundance of vegetables in South European diets, everyone I've met has told me that Britain is the most veg-friendly European country, which sounds paradoxical?

Answers:
Latvia is good for vegetarian food and because practically everything is organically grown you can eat there without guilt and everything really does taste much better there. Tomatoes, potatoes, gherkins ...... Mmmmmmm!

There are many vegetarian restaurants in Riga (Capital) and if you do decide to go there there is an absolute must have - a booklet called Riga in Your Pocket. Lists all restaurants by category and gives you an insight as to cost and what the food and staff and ambience of the place is like. I could recommend a hotel there too, but if you want to go write back in and I will oblige.

Been there, done that, eaten it ........

I am from the Uk and have onlyvisited Holland, Spain, Australia and America. I fund Autralia to be the best followed by UK, then Hollandand then Spain.

Now a day, vegetarian restaurants has been increasing everywhere, you can find it easily

I don't suggest Germany. I find it very difficult to find certain products. I think England is one of the best places.

japan would be #1 in east Asia
and Sicily in Europe

Any Buddhist or Hindu country would be very vegetarian friendly. Anywhere in mainland Southeast Asia is great. They may or may not list vegetarian foods on the menu, but if you ask for vegetarian food, they will happily accomodate you. I would imagine the same would be true throughout India. Northern and Eastern Europe can be difficult.

I guess it depends on the culture of the country. Also on how developed the country is.

From personal experience i would have to say Greece is not vegetarian friendly at all. i was there for the summer and i have to say most days i was stuck eating pizza and plain pasta because 99% of things on the menu have meat in them. And then when i asked if they could take out the meat in some restaurants they would give me a confused look and say it was not possible. I mostly traveled on the islands but i would think some restaurants in athens could be a bit more accomidating since its a city
