Vegetarians Only Question!?!

Question:

Vegetarians Only Question!?

I am a vegetarian and this thought has occurred to me . . . we don't eat meat, but we eat meatless products that resemble meat, even taste similar and have the same texture sometimes. What's with this? We're weird.

Answers:
Not all vegetarians eat mock meats. For years I wouldn't try any faux meat, but now I can only eat fake meat that isn't very "meaty" - fake bacon or pepperoni, for example.

I don't think it's weird though. I am vegan for animal rights reasons, so my argument would be that - since it wasn't killed - then I can eat it without feeling guilty.

To an extent, I do agree with you though - because if something tasted and had the same texture as meat, it would freak me out, and I wouldn't be able to eat it.

Yes, you are weird, and so are all vegetarians. What you need is a good pork sausage, if you know what I mean.

You mean like the boca suff, My hubby is a carnivore and doesnt think it tastes like meat. But Yea I guess we are weird.

Well a lot of vegetarians don't dislike the taste of meat, just the ethical issue of eating it. I personally eat veggie sausages sometimes for variety. I guess it's sort of weird though.

Why is it weird? If something tastes good and compliments a meal, then so be it. We (humans) have basically been raised in a society that focuses it's meals on animal flesh, so it's often very easy to incorporate fake meat into recipies. We also enjoy the taste of some meat products, so if we can find a healthier and more ethical way of getting a similar taste, why not? Some vegetarians eschew all meat-like products saying that they just aren't necessary and are still a way of conforming to a meat based society. To each his own. : )

Initially, it was not an ethical issue which caused me to give up meat, but health issues. Once I started finding out about the ethical issues, I'm very glad that I did give up meat. However, I do enjoy the Boca, Morning Star Farms, etc. not because it resembles meat, so much as it is good for me (protein) without being unethical.
I hope this reply makes sense. Thanks

I don't eat fake meat because for one thing I can't tolerate processed foods (allergies but also because I don't like being reminded of meat. I know several people who also are veggie and won't eat fake meat, so we don't all eat it. I've always thought it quite odd that some vegetarians like to eat things that resemble meat.

Well, the product isn't actually meat so you are saving lives by eating it. Also, if you are a vegetarian for health reasons rather than morality, you are making a healthier choice by eating the "faux meat". It's not really that weird, it's just helping more people to become veggie.

A lot of vegetarians are vegetarians for health reasons, and have no problem with eating something that resembles meat, as long as it isn't meat. Still, some ethical vegetarians do eat that stuff too. I guess they just like the taste of meat, and are happy to eat something like it so long as no animals have been harmed. Some vegetarians simply eat meat-like foods because of their nutritional properties. Personally, I don't like non-meat-meat foods, as I find it a bit weird eating something that is a replica of meat, as well as disliking the taste. I think that it's mainly people who only became vegetarians later on in life, and used to eat meat, who eat those products, as they miss the taste. I've never tasted real meat before, so I've never really much cared for things that are like it. That's what I think, anyway.

While you may have picked to be a vegetarian for health or ethical concerns, no one likes to be a "freak". When you can grab a "burger" and sit around at a cookout or have "bacon" for breakfast, you still fit in and are able to stick to your personal reason for being a vegetarian.

I only eat the stuff like soy burgers because i still need the nutrients that i'm losing from meat. the substitute will still give us vegetarians all the nutrients we need and get from meat.

it's to save the animals!

I don't every really eat like facon or tofurky...it kind of is like a loophole for the vegetarians who wish they werent!
