A good savoury baked beans recipe?!

Question:

A good savoury baked beans recipe?

All the recipes I've found include lots of sugar or maple syrup or molasses and I can't stand the taste of them with baked beans. Can anyone give me a recipe for baked beans that is not sweet?

Thanks!

Oh and it has to be vegetarian.

Baked bean recipes usually call for sweet items like brown sugar, molasses or some type of syrup. That's what makes them baked beans. I happened upon one you may like. Omit the (very small amount) syrup if you like.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup onions, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 (15 ounce) can great northern beans, do not drain
1/2 cup tomatoes, crushed (canned or fresh)
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or barley malt syrup
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon mustard

Preheat oven to 350°.
Heat oil; sauté onions and garlic.
Mix all ingredients together and place in a casserole dish.
Cover and bake for 25-30 minutes.

It's my understanding that "baked beans" are called that because they ARE made with brown sugar or molasses. Do you simply want a bean recipe? Here's one that may work for you:

Vegetarian Cassoulet

NGREDIENTS

* 2 tablespoons olive oil
* 1 onion
* 2 carrots, peeled and diced
* 1 pound dry navy beans, soaked overnight
* 4 cups mushroom broth
* 1 cube vegetable bouillon
* 1 bay leaf
* 4 sprigs fresh parsley
* 1 sprig fresh rosemary
* 1 sprig fresh lemon thyme, chopped
* 1 sprig fresh savory
* 1 large potato, peeled and cubed

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat a small amount of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onion and carrots in oil until tender.
2. In a slow cooker, combine beans, carrots and onion, mushroom broth, bouillon, and bay leaf. Pour in water if necessary to cover ingredients with water. Tie together parsley, rosemary, thyme, and savory, and add to the pot. Cook on Low for 8 hours.
3. Stir in potato, and continue cooking for 1 hour. Remove herbs before serving

My favourite recipe for baked beans is very simple: Baked bean jaffles! If you don't know that name, jaffles are toasted sandwiches sealed around the edges - they are delicious with baked beans inside (and cheese too is good) and then dipped in sweet chilli sauce!

Oh and baked beans are also really good with omelettes, or just on toast with cheese and pepper on top. Sorry, simple I know but that's the good thing about baked beans - minimal preparation time!

Have you tried Bush's Vegetarian Baked Beans, from a can? I think they're great. I dump them in a bowl, heat em up and serve em at family gatherings. Nobody knows the difference!
