Am I an alcoholic if I blackout when I drink?!
Am I an alcoholic if I blackout when I drink?
I don't drink very often, a few times a month, sometimes less. But it seems like I always blackout. And I really hate this. Lately just two drinks is all it takes for me to wake up the next day and realize hours from the night before are missing. I have heard in the past that this is a sign of alcoholism, but I don't feel I consume enough of it to be considered one, and I certainly don't depend on it to get by. I guess I'm just worried.

No your just a pansy lightweightt
Maybe if you are drinking long island iced teas you would be OK. Low carb drinks without sweeteners also are good.
Yes. Blackouts are a sign of over indulgence.
Maybe you should not drink at all. It seems your body is trying to tell you something. Blacking out is awful who knows what can happen to you if you don't have your wits about you.
I wouldn't say that you definitely are an alcoholic, but you are more susceptible than most people. I used to black out a lot too and my family has a histroy of alcoholics. Like you, I would only drink on weekends or whatever. To me, an alcoholic drinks all week long.
yeah, you should be worried if you are blacking out after drinking - cut back on drinks and have just one, see if it makes a difference. your body is telling you something and you should listen...try drinking water in a beer glass or juice in a cocktail glass if you feel self conscious or are being pressured to have more than 1 drink. if you're not an alcoholic then it shouldn't be a problem to cut back or abstain entirely ;)
What you're saying makes absolutely no sense. If you are saying that two alcoholic drinks cause you to blackout, then one of three things is going on here:
1) The size of the drinks you're referring to are 32 oz. or larger.
2) You weigh approximately 50 lbs. or less.
3) You have a sever medical condition and should consult a physician.
If you are a full-grown adult, and an occasional two "normal"-sized drinks are causing you to blackout, then no, this is not a sign of alcoholism, but of something much graver.
some people define an alcoholic as any individual who by consuming alcohol creates significant life problems for themselves. those same people would put blackouts in that category. maybe you have developed an allergy, maybe you have alcoholic tendancies. don't let it go to far, either quit drinking or have it checked out by a doctor.
how do you define two drinks? i mean, long island iced tea contains 5 shots of liquor. or if you had two beers but they were 40oz cans, that's a significantly larger amount than two regular-sized cans.
or perhaps you are on medications that potentiate the effects of alcohol.
either way, whether or not this defines you as an alcoholic, WHY would you consider drinking anything alcoholic ever again if it causes you to black out? ... seriously.
...and congratulations to walkerfire
Yes, blacking out from drinking is one warning sign of alcoholism. My dad is an alcoholic who is trying to recover on his own. Please be careful, some people have a genetic predisposition to alcoholism, especially if there are others in the family. Take care of yourself.
You're not an alcoholic don't worry! x
Basically the rate that everyone's body is affected by alcohol is different to everyone elses body. And how much it affects you differs to.
This is just how your body works. Try drinking a longer drink as it'll last longer and leave ten minutes before you drink your next one. Good luck x
Alcoholism is best describe in terms as does it get in the way you live life.
If you only drink 1 drink a year, but you drink it at the same time every year as in New Years night. You're an Alcoholic.
Your black-outs are from drinking, not because you're a alcoholic.
You can not handle drinking alcohol and I would suggest you not drink before something bad happens to you or someone else.
Stop drinking if it effects you that way! You can have a good time without alcohol
You may have a sensitivity to sedation or may be one of the few that do not smoke and drink. Smoking decreases the effects of sedation. To stop the blackouts I'd recommend cutting out hard liquor. I drink now and then, not every day and not very much. I blacked out once from 3 Vodka drinks on an empty stomach. I now stay away from hard liquor and have been blackout free for 13 years. It is scary to think you could do things like drive a car. Anybody from AA will tell you you're an alcoholic. But if the blackouts stop when you stay away from hard liquor? Watch not only alcohol but going into surgery or even laughing gas. I have found that it effects me stronger than most people. Alcohol is a sedative. You may be one who is effected easily by some types of medicine (even allergy and cold medicine).
From what you say you have signs of alcolism. Go to some AA or ala-teen meetings and judge for yourself.
^ Is drinking that important to you? I'd be more concerned with the blacking out, than having a drink!
Maybe you're alcohol sensitive. The blacking out worries me I would go to the doctor to make sure you don't have any underlying medical problems. For example when some diabetics drink their glucose (sugar) drops and they can pass out, people with high blood pressure can have the same reaction. If you are taking medication even over the counter they might not mix well with alcohol. I hope this helps.
