Why does my yellow cake come out so dry?!
Why does my yellow cake come out so dry?
I have tried different recipes using either butter, oil, or a combination of both. I have tried crisco and even mayo! Does anyone have a tried and true secret for moist yellow cake?

Where do you live first at high altitude or what. don't overbake for one thing. You need eggs and oil for moisture. If it is a scratch cake try actual cake flour rather than all purpose. I like Swan's down.
There are a lot of good recipes for cake in the cake bible by Rose Bernbaum. They call her the Rose for her famous wedding cake roses. check the bon apetit web site.

All my recipes are in mastercook format
try using a little extra oil in the cake, or extra water.
I make my yellow cakes out of boxes. They come out moist and taste great and much less fussing.
How long are you cooking the cake layers? Does your oven run very hot? If so, either turn down the cooking temperature or check your cakes before the time indicated on the recipe. You probably need to start checking them with a toothpick at least 15 minutes before the time in the recipe if you think your oven is running hot. The cakes are done when a toothpick inserted comes out with a few dry crumbs or is clean. They are underdone if the toothpick comes out with uncooked batter. You could also add a few tablespoons of oil to your batter to ensure they come out moist.
If it is a store-bought cake in a box make sure you are using the correct measurements, like the eggs and oil. Hmmm... how long do you bake it?
this is probably going to sound really gross, but try to put a little mayo in your cake...I asked a baker the same question and that's what they put in their cakes...i tried it, and it actually was the moistest cake i have ever tasted..good luck!
