How long are canned foods good to eat?!

Question:

How long are canned foods good to eat?

my grandparents passed 2.5 and 3 years ago. we have been cleaning the estate out. i took most of the canned foods that my grandmother put up. we have been eating these canned foods at her house for years and havent had any problems. i used a can of carrots that she put up in 1990 in a stew today. they looked fine, smelled fine and tasted fine, with no ill effects. i was careful to only take the jars that had tight lids, lids with no rust, contents that looked right and were of the proper color. some of the dates go back to 79 and the newest ones are from 00. how long are these good to eat? will the change of environment reduce their shelf life? they were moved from my grandparents fruit cellar to my pantry. like i said the carrots were put up 17 years ago and i have had no problems, quite tasty. my mom has vegetables that she put up in the early 70s in her fruit cellar that she still uses with no problems.

My mother did stuff like that, so did my grandmothers. That stuff normally stays good as long as it's sealed. Canning jars, when it's bad, the lids will pop up, as long as thye're sucked in and sealed, it should be fine. Continue to store them in a cool, dark place, until ready to open and use.

they are pretty much good 4 ever

they are good to if you dont open the can

if they have no exp date on them i would be carefull. but if they are really old, they make really cool antiques!

throw it away for the love of god

They are pretty much good for as long as they stay vacuum sealed. However most companies will state for best taste use within two years. As long as it smells and looks fine when you open it then you should be good to go.

yeah.. brent is right

Who cares?food is food! its good.eat it,if you dont get sick then there fine!

Canned foods with last a reeeaaaally long time because they are vacuum packed and sealed. So they should be good for a long time.

I would say they have been good at least this long, make sure you bring them to a boil before you eat them and you shouldn't have any problems
