There are. I saw some in Peru last year. The original tomato was a tree and the fruits were like large plum tomatoes but more solid than the tomato we know now.
We "discovered" these Wild Florida Everglades Tomatoes while being given the owner's tour of a well known local nursery which exclusively sells tropical and sub-tropical fruit trees, fruit shrubs and fruit vines
I would think that there were. Birds eat tomatoes and then poop somewhere. The seads are scattered by the wayside and they are not planted in enough soil...not deep enough. That would cause them to die almost as soon as the first hot day comes along . man where did all that come from..
they could be,in hot humid places. but being red and juicy the birds would get them pretty quick!
There are not fruits and vegetables that didn't at some point exist in the wild before man came along. There is lots of genetically modified produce that can longer produce seeds on their own, but we have to genetically engineer produce that never existed before. We've combined things to create new varieties, but that's not the same thing.
Do a search for wild tomatoes and will learn that their a few different varities of wild tomatoes.
Just because you don't have things growing wild in your backyard doesn't mean they aren't in other places in the world. Have you been everywhere in the world?
I'm sure there are tomatoes that come up wild, gee I've found some in my yard. But then I dig them up and plant them somewhere and they are no longer wild.
