What are some tips for cutting lactose out of one's diet?!

Question:

What are some tips for cutting lactose out of one's diet?

I want to try going dairy/lactose free for a while and see if it helps me feel better. However, the task seem rather daunting -- even moreso than when I had to gluten out of my diet.

I am so used to eating cheese with ust about every meal, and I cook/bake with milk, etc. Any tips?

Answers:
Try using vegan alternatives to cheese and milk.

Substitute soy milk for milk and margarine for butter in baking, and either just give up the cheese or try some vegan cheese alternatives (they're all non-dairy and lactose free).

There are some good recipes and reviews of vegan foods here:

avoid milk and milk products

Stay away from dairy products.

Cheese is definitely out, and as far as I know... for us cheese lovers, there is nothing that even comes close that I've seen. Baking with milk, cream, etc. is out. Anything else, like prepared foods.... read labels VERY carefully. Sometimes there are milk products in things you wouldn't expect it to be in, so reading all labels is key, especially in the beginning while you get to know product ingredients. I think any major diet change can seem (or be) daunting, but if it has to be something permanent in order to be in good health, you'll get accustomed to it in time if you have to.

You don't say how you're not feeling well (i.e. symptoms). It could be something else in your diet that is causing the problem too, or something you're lacking. Look closely at other things in your diet that could be the problem.

Good Luck!

i am learning to enjoy vanilla soy milk. it takes a little getting used to but with an open mind and a little time you may like it too. I also enjoy soy yogurt. Again the time/taste thing applies.

now if i could just remember to drink the soy milk. i had such an adverson to reg. milk, b/c of the way it made me feel i forget to drink my soy milk. mental note to self for lunch. hope this helps.

Hugs, Kuka.

If you used to have your cereals with milk - try to use a fruit juice instead. I have been doing it for a long time now, and I love it. My milk intake now comes only from my cup of coffee in the morning, an ocassional youghurt, and cheese - which I would never be able to give up. After a while you will get used to not having milk, and not cooking on it, even if it will be strange in the beginning.
Try to use soy milk where possible. It is sweet though (I am not sure if it's naturally sweet or they add sugar to it).
There is also Rice Milk. You can get these from any food store.
Eat dark chocolate instead of milk chocs (even digestives come with dark choc nowadays).
Cook on water instead of milk - to add flavor use stocks or herbs.

I use to drink milk three to four times a day and eat cheese like there was no tomorrow. When I did I was always congested. I went to a nutrionalist and he said I have a food sensitivity to dairy. I now drink Rice milk, I use it on my cereal and use it to make smoothies for breakfast or snacks. He suggested to avoid cheese unless it was Swiss, Mozzarella, cottage cheese, or actual natural cheeses that don't have different things added to them because that is what makes them unhealthy. Maybe try some different things from health food stores that don't have all the additives to them.

Dairy: Change to: juice, soy milk, rice milk, almond milk
(try different brands as some work better than others)
Dairy butter: Change to: Coconut oil, apple sauce
1 cup milk (for baking) Change to:1 cup water + 2 tbsp. safe margarine
1 cup butter milk 1/2 cup rice or soy milk 1 tbsp.vinegar or lemon juice

Soy milk, soy cheese. These were made to replace milk in vegan's diets.

No milk, no cream, no ice cream, fat free ice cream, without milk you would be left with water. I don't see how you can possibly do it!

don't eat or drink anything that is a dairy product
