There are many types of pesto. Most common is basil pesto which has basil, olive oil, parm. cheese, garlic and pine nuts in its basic form. There are recipes for many kinds at foodtv's website and maybe yahoo recipes.
Many have nut allergies.

Pesto contains olive oil, garlic, basil leaves and pine nuts. Maybe it's the nuts?

oil, pine nuts, garlic, various herbs- often basil, sometimes parmesean cheese. There are lots of types of pesto though.

most pestos have... basil, olive oil, garlic, parmesean and pine nuts

Do you have any nut allergies?

Pine nuts would be my first choice .
Basically pesto is made of olive oil, pine nuts , a hard Italian cheese, basil and garlic and that's it.
There of course are many variations on the basic recipe and one that frequently shows up is the one that substitutes the much cheaper walnuts for the very pricey pine nuts. So that's another place that i would look.

You are probably allergic to the pine nuts. Allergies can be acquired later in life. Even if you have not ever had a reaction before...I would see an allergist.
Tree nut allergies are common potentially life-threatening food allergies. They are often lifelong. Tree nuts may belong to different food families which are unrelated to each other and tree nuts are not related to peanut. Peanut allergic people can often eat tree nuts and tree nut allergic allergic people can often take peanuts. However, some allergic individuals may be allergic to both peanut and tree nuts. In addition, you can be allergic to some but not all tree nuts. Almond seems to cause the least problems of all common tree nuts.
