Vegetarians... gelatin...?!
Vegetarians... gelatin...?
If you are a vegetarian did you know this:
What is gelatin made from?
Gelatin is made from the bones, skins, hoofs, and tendons of cows, pigs, fish and other animals. It is animal protein used especially for its thickening and gelling properties. It is a non-vegetarian product. It is often used in candies and Jello. http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/faqingredien...
Kosher gelatin can be made with fish bones, and/or beef or pork skins. Contrary to assumptions, it is also considered kosher to use it with dairy products.
I read this fact yesterday and it sparked curiosity in me, The type of gelatin used is pork skin in Circus Peanuts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/circus_pean...
I am not a vegetarian, however have friends who are for religious reasons and wonder if many vegetarians are aware of this? who would have thought a food product would be in candy? Any other products you know of in same respect?
Answers:
White refined sugar is filtered and rid of color using bone char.
Yes, I did know that. That is why Muslims can't eat marshmallows.
There are plenty of substitutes to achieve a gelatinous state. Agar is made from seaweed, and jello is formed at rrom temp. There is also guar gum.
This question has been talked about before on here. I did not know what gelatin was made of until I read it on here a few months ago. Sounds yucky.
You forgot to include a mention for Arrow root.
:~)
In the end,, the chemical compound Gelatin is so benign,, it is humorous the fear V&V and archaic religious followers make over a fun desert today.
